Report: Nick Craig.

Nick Craig (wearing Fish's hoody!) Conditions on Saturday were fantastic with a gusty force 5-6 making for some exhilarating sailing. Upwind was hard work but sailors were rewarded downwind as Gareth Williams the race officer had laid perfect downwind angles to provide some superb reaches. The vicious gusts made for survival conditions at times with only Mike Edwards & Nick Craig not taking a cold capsize.

Craig won all 3 races but both Terry Curtis & Jon Fish led races to score 4,2,2 and 2,6,3 respectively. Light wind specialist Neil Goodhead almost found his toestraps to score 7,5,4 to complete the top 4 overnight.

Mike 'Gurlee' Edwards Thanks to a gruelling day, Saturday night was quiet by OK standards with everyone in bed by 1am after some beer & curry thanks to the hospitality of Mike & Kath Edwards.

Sunday was more gentle with a shifty force 2-3. Curtis has to miss the days sailing due to a severe "bug" he had picked up (that or turning 40 has reduced his beer tolerance!) Leading female sailor Mike Edwards showed great downwind speed to push Craig hard in the 1st race and come back after a poor start in the 2nd race to finish 2nd and claim 2nd overall. Fish briefly led the last race but could not hold off Edwards to finish 3rd overall.

Daz Prior (tries out his new boat) & Ben Steel Daz Prior had his best race yet in an OK pulling through to 2nd for a couple of laps before a capsize on a tack, but he will clearly be seen at the front of the fleet again. Keith Byers sailed a consistent series of top 5 results to finish 4th overall. Top effort went to Ben Steel who put his boat back together after windy Saturday to push some very experienced sailors hard on the Sunday, all at the age of 16 - he will be a leading contender for next years OK juniors!

Start, Race 3 Report: Bill Bradburn

The 2007 South Staffs OK open was to be a frustrating event for all but Neil Goodhead who was clearly the fastest boat on the day. The classic OK trophy, engraved with the names of some of the best sailors in the country over the years, finally finding its way on to his mantlepiece. The light and shifty conditions tested everyones patience and resolve at some time.

Tony Hotchkiss and his team got the first race underway on time at the first go and up the first beat Neil led the way until overtaken by Bill Bradburn on a windshift - a situation he rectified by the windward mark. However he ran out of wind on the run and rounded behind Bill for the next beat with the pack thirty yards behind. Bill managed to break away on some good shifts while there was a bit of steady pressure and held the lead for over a lap. Inevitably in the lulls, Neil reeled him in and took the lead, pulling away consistently as he settled down.

As the race progressed, Mike Edwards, having broken from the pack caught up and pushed Bill to third. They stayed in these positions to finish with Gavin Waldron coming in close fourth after a good couple of downwind legs on a filling breeze bringing him right up.

The fleet had a break for lunch and watched the heroic swimming effort on the part of some of the fleet to find Tony Woods car keys - still in the pond however.

Race 2 started in similar conditions to the first but this time Neil made no mistake and broke away followed by a pack round windward mark. Bill came from behind on the windward side and Mike took the leeward route to round the bottom mark behind John Salomonson and Keith Dutton. Mike and Bill pulled through to second and third. As the race progressed, Mike made up on some of Neil's lead for a while. One and two remained the same although Mike finished on a huge starboard lift which gave Neil some anxious moment as he was trying to work his way back from the left to hold the lead. Bill just lost third to Tony Woods who managed not to fall into the same holes in the wind and held his cool.

Race 3 followed after a short pee (or tea) break and now Neil had nothing to worry about so took an early lead never to be challenged.

Ed Dutton, sailing quicker than ever, rounded second followed by Bill, Mike and the pack. A gap opened up and Ed held his place strongly, built up for a lap with some very mature sailing. A lapse in concentration let Bill sail through at a windward mark with Mike right behind him. The next downwind leg saw Mike and Ed find some extra pressure and sail over Bill but Ed stopped in a light patch and Bill followed Mike to the next Mark. Neil, Mike and Bill broke from the rest of the fleet with Ed doing well in fourth which he held to the finish in front of Tony.

At the prize giving, Trudie Danbury presented the David Danbury Trophy for the best South Staffs junior to Ed Dutton.

Thanks must go to Purple Marine, who sponsored the prizes capping a pleasant day of sailing, even if a little frustrating for some. The day closed after tea and cakes, a few drinks and Tony waiting for the nice RAC man to take him home.

Report: Robert Deaves

Despite the forecast of very light winds, 30 OK Dinghies turned up at Northampton Sailing Club for the 2007 Inland Championships. Three sailors dominated proceedings in the very light winds with Tony Thresher walking away with the title, the veteran trophy and, for West Oxfordshire Sailing Club, the team trophy.

Alex Scoles had the honour of leading round the first two marks in all three races on Saturday. However he only managed to convert race two to a win. In the first race he let through Neil Goodhead and Thresher on the very tricky upwind legs. Thresher, sailing an old wooden O'Donnell hull he had just acquired demonstrated exceptional speed and good tactics to place second again in race two and then went on to win the final race of the day from Terry Curtis and Scoles. Overnight Thresher led by three points from Scoles, with Goodhead one point further back.

Sunday dawned flat calm and cloudy. After a short postponement race four started in little more than a zephyr and turned into a race of ups and downs for most of the fleet. However Goodhead found more pressure out of the start and led all the way, with the occasional bit of pressure from Curtis. Scoles started badly and played catch up and finally moved into third at the final gybe mark. Thresher took fourth from Robert Deaves by less than a second, but it was enough to give him the title as all further racing was abandoned. For a while everyone thought that Goodhead had won but a closer look at the sailing instructions revealed no discard after four races, so Thresher became the surprised winner and all those who had been black flagged in race three had to carry a large score.

The weekend was quite encouraging for the class with five juniors taking part and the light winds allowed them to really shine and provide notice for future years. Tom Lonsdale sailed exceptionally well to finish sixth overall and won a carbon tiller extension generously donated for the first junior by C2 Marine. Lonsdale also won, together with Thresher and Ross Lonsdale in 10th, the very attractive Blithfield Stump for the best club.

Report: Robert Deaves

Using a borrowed boat, assembled just hours before the first race, Ian Harris won the 2007 Giles Cartoon Trophy at Waldringfield Sailing Club over the weekend of 29/30 September. Saturday brought great racing conditions with a shifty 8-12 knot breeze and a high spring tide. After a messy and crowded first mark rounding, Jon Fish took the lead and led the first race to the finish. Harris was a solid second until tragedy struck on the final run, when he nearly spun out - twice - before recovering to finish third. Gybe talking was a common theme that evening.

Fish looked set to repeat his first race victory in race two taking an early lead from the pack. However Robert Deaves took the lead up the second tricky beat and stretched out a lead along with Harris just behind. Terry Gibb had showed up with an old favourite and surprised everyone with his downwind speed. Crossing the club line for the second lap, he caught Fish on port and a crash tack left Fish in the drink right on the club line. Robert Deaves led away from the chaos but it was Harris who took the higher course and rounded the uptide windward mark with a useful lead. Harris was never really troubled for the race win with Gibb overhauling Deaves on the final beat for second.

Saturday night's social event was simply a matter of staying alive. Dan Ager proved he was more than an old woman by leading the way through the all night drinking session. However the night fever and spirits paid its toll by first light, as several faces were absent from the tea queue at the clubhouse on Sunday morning. However as luck would have it, an overnight wind of change brought a flat calm and a sunny sky, and after three hours of waiting, an abandonment and an early prizegiving ensued. So Harris wins again and slunk back to the west country with his due rewards.

Race 2 start, Ardleigh SC Open. Photo: Ardleigh Race Team Report: Will Turner

A good turnout of 18 OKs, including 8 from the home club made their way to Ardleigh S.C. to be greeted by a warm welcome and the sunshine ration of summer '07. Unfortunately though wind was in short supply, and after several abortive attempts to start race one Race Officer Steve Ede postponed for lunch.

When race one finally got underway in a gentle afternoon breeze, Will Turner rounded the windward mark first followed by Terry Curtis and Nick Craig. Neil Goodhead was heard cursing the randomness of it all. John Ball picked up some pressure downwind to take the lead by the leeward mark, and the first six boats rounded in a tight bunch. Everything was up for grabs in the light, shifty conditions and Neil Goodhead shot straight to the front of the pack, proclaiming "It's easy if you know where you're going." Once again the front boats rounded the last mark nose-to-tail, and after a frantic roll-tacking duel up the last beat Mike Edwards emerged to take the gun seconds ahead of Turner, with Goodhead in 3rd and Craig 4th.

Race two started with both ends of the line looking favoured, depending on where you were at the time! A rusty Will Turner was left doing spins having infringed Goodhead at the pin, who emerged with Andy Turner to lead up the first beat. As the wind began to peter out on the second lap, the race developed into a three-way duel between light weather specialists Goodhead and Turner and World Championship specialist Craig. Craig came out on top, Goodhead and Turner drifting in shortly afterwards in 2nd and 3rd respectively. The fleet made a bee-line for the shore rather than facing the prospect of a third race as what was left of the breeze faded.

It was a shame the wind didn't play ball for the day, as the race organisation was excellent and the good sized fleet made for some tight racing all over the course.

Report: Robert Deaves

Nick Craig, Alex Scoles, photo: Felpham Race TeamIn winning the Craftinsure OK Dinghy National Championships at Felpham Sailing Club, the recently crowned world champion Nick Craig took his seventh British National title and his fourth major title so far this year. With an awesome display of consistency and concentration in the light and shifty conditions, he won each and every race in the 43 boat fleet. Sometimes he won by a considerable distance and sometimes by as little as a few seconds, but it was never really in doubt where the title would be heading this year,

Only six of the eight scheduled races were sailed as the wind on Sunday failed to cooperate. The final race on Sunday morning was sailed in conditions where a sense of humour was an essential tool with massive place changes across the fleet, as the offshore breeze fought with a slowly building sea breeze. However Craig pulled back from an unusual third place to overhaul the race leader and second overall Neil Goodhead and take the title.

For some the weekend started on Thursday with a useful training day from RYA coach David Mellor, in what turned out to be the best conditions of the event. Racing for real started on Friday afternoon with two races sailed in a light and shifty offshore breeze. Craig let his intentions be known with an emphatic victory, some way ahead of the pack. Goodhead posted a second while Alex Scoles pinched third on the line at the offwind finish from defending champion Robert Deaves and Pete Turner; all three boats were overlapped when crossing the line.

Terry Curtis initially led race two in slightly more wind, but after crossing the finish line in third, discovered he was black flagged at the start. Robert Deaves finished second and a surprised Tony Thresher was bumped up to third. Craig, of course won.

The weather on Saturday didn't look too promising with a very weak onshore wind starting to build early on the day. Race three was one of the closest of the weekend with lightweight sailor Al Fry leading round the top mark in very light conditions. Dan Ager briefly took the lead at the gybe mark and on the run, six boats were neck and neck beside each other. Alex Scoles found a bit more pressure to lead up the final beat, but Craig piled on the pressure and took the lead on the final tack to the finish line. Scoles finished a few second behind with Deaves in third.

Curtis was at the front again in race four building a useful lead on Craig, but it wasn't to last. Craig finally found second gear and overhauled Curtis on the final beat. A rejuvenated class secretary, Andy Turner in his new Idol Composites boat finished third. The final race of the day was another victory for Craig, leading from start to finish with a long procession behind him. Turner again found excellent speed to place second while Ian Harris sailed well to place third.

So came the final day. The wind looked decidedly dicey before the start and just got worse. Goodhead started near the pin and crossed the fleet on the first major shift to take a considerable lead. However Craig had him in his sights and over the next hour overtook him and maintained a small lead. With the wind shifting in direction by 60 degrees and in pressure by 10 knots, the race was not for the faint hearted. The final beat was a near drift and Craig just managed to maintain his lead with Goodhead second while Thresher took four places on the final beat to place third.

Then the wind died completely and everyone thought it was time to go home. However the race officer persisted and was rewarded by a light sea breeze at about 14.00. By the time he had set a course and started the Laser 2 fleet, which were sharing the event, it was 14.30. Even though the time limit for the day was 15.00, the ever keen OK fleet kept pushing the start and after two general recalls and an abandoned start because the Laser 2 fleet were rounding the leeward mark in front of the start line, the time limit expired and the race officer sent the fleet home.

So Nick Craig adds the national title to the OK Dinghy world title he won in Poland a month ago. Neil Goodhead posted his best ever result as runner up while last year's champion Robert Deaves had to settle for third. The turnout of 43 included an increasing number of juniors who were all encouraged to sail this year and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Jake Cracknell from Ardleigh took the top junior prize from Ed Dutton and Alex Hobern. As usual Felphan Sailing Club excelled in the hospitality department, and with extensive prizes from Craftinsure, a great weekend was wrapped up with a Caribbean themed fancy dress evening and barbecue.

Report: Andy Turner

1st leg, 1st race, photo: Jacob Deane South Windermere has a great history of OK sailing, with well known sailors such as Martin Shepherd, John Derbyshire, Julian Kettle and Steve Goacher. Eleven OKs returned to SWSC in very picturesque surroundings at the southern end of Lake Windermere after a gap of 30 years. The training session run the previous day by Neil Goodhead was much appreciated.

Race one started in a very shifty westerly breeze with strong downdrafts from the surrounding mountains. Mike Edwards and Neil Goodhead had a good tussle for the lead with Mike winning. Astern, Paul Pike showed good speed to finish fourth with Andy Holmes from South Staffs fifth.

In race two Neil Goodhead powered up the first beat through ninety degree windshifts, and held the lead to win from Edwards. Daren Prior, from the home club took a creditable third.

In race three Mike Edwards again showed good tactical awareness and boat speed to finish first from Andy Turner. Andy Holmes was third and Ben Steel (in his first OK open) was 6th.

Many thanks to South Windermere for hosting a really enjoyable event.

Ian Harris, photo: IOSSC Race Team Terry Curtis proved un-catchable on a windy Saturday at Isle of Sheppey SC, leading from start to finish in races 1 and 2, and, although briefly overtaken in race 3, he went on to claim his 3rd win. Behind him Mike Edwards was mixing it with Gavin Waldron, Keith Byers and Ian Harris. Some seriously good surfing and planing made for a great days sailing.

IOSSC OK startline, photo: IOSSC Race Team Overnight Curtis looked secure in 1st place, but he didn't look so secure the next morning after being downed by a few Spitfires, many thanks to our very genial hosts both in the IOSSC and the local Napier Inn, not forgetting the pint pulling power of barmaid Edwards!

Mike 'Tosser' Edwards on the start line, photo: IOSSC Race Team Sunday proved altogether different with a fickle breeze and hot sun. Edwards relished the conditions and punished the fleet with stunning light wind speed, covering Waldron to take race 4 and defending from Cutis to win race 5. Race 6 completed his 3 wins for the day as he resisted a late tacking duel with Harris to take the days honours.

So with discards applied, the overall win went to Curtis, with Edwards in 2nd and Harris 3rd.

Our many thanks to all those at IOSSC who hosted a most excellent event, provided great sailing and made it a great weekend.

Report: Terry Curtis

The OK Dinghy Class continued its 50th Year celebrations with an all-comers event and anniversary dinner at Upper Thames SC over the weekend of 23rd and 24th June, with over 50 sailors competing at some point through the weekend and many more participating from the club lawns.

The focus of the event was aimed at getting OK sailors past and present celebrating 50 years of the class both on off the water. Consequently current class stalwarts offered their boats to some of the names from the past for the Saturday's racing schedule.

In spite of the dubious forecast, the sun did shine for most of Saturday with a moderate westerly breeze allowing for a decent beat upstream on the spectacular upper reaches of the Thames.

With 33 boats on the line for the all-comers race, there were some anxious boat owners on the shore hoping that the great and good from the past could still remember how it was done. Thankfully the fleet got away without any major incidents from a very busy club line, lead by Andy Williams who hasn't sailed an OK for more than 10 years. Current National Champion Robert Deaves overhauled Williams on the first beat and went on to win by a comfortable margin. Williams battled it out with Rob Bellfield to take second, Bellfied third and Bill Bradburn 4th.

The second race was by invitation for any sailor achieving top 3 at National or Inland Championships. A star studded fleet took to the water and again Robert Deaves lead the way from 1989 Champion John Derbyshire, with Class Chairman Mike Edwards in 3rd. Deaves again held his lead to the finish with Neil Goodhead from South Staffs working his way up to second with Terry Curtis, current Inland Champion, coming home third.

The day's sailing was wrapped up with a relay race which started Le Mans style, but in the bar downing half a pint before negotiating the clubs steps - fortunately there were no major casualties! The 8 teams of 4 sailors then raced around a short square course and back to the shore to pass the batten back in the bar. Half way through the race the inevitable happened and with a rumble of thunder, the heavens opened, much to the amusement of the spectators now sheltering in the marquee. The race was won by the Upper Thames juniors - The Young Guns - Alex Hobern, Tom and Sam Preston, with Julian Burnham, a rather older junior, making up the numbers.

A great day culminated with a sit down dinner for 140, including many stars of the class both past and present. Guests were entertained with speeches by class legends James-Bridge Butler, Jonty Sherwill and John Chaundy. A hugely successful raffle and auction raised over £1000 for Sail 4 Cancer. Thanks must go to all the sponsors - Pinnell & Bax, Crewsaver, Purple Marine, Hyde Sails, North Sails, Batt Sails and Craftinsure - who generously donated the raffle prizes and auction lots. These ranged from a 50% discount on a new North sail, kit bags, and buoyancy aids, to a pair of Nick Craig's underpants (snapped up for £10!!). In true OK style, the party carried on into the early hours with a disco, loads of booze and ultimately the drunken sing-song in the bar.

Sunday arrived all too early, the club catering laid on a fine breakfast and 33 boats set out for the 3 race, 1 discard format. With sore heads a-plenty, there were a few notable boats spotted on shore with their covers firmly untouched. The wind had shifted round to the South overnight proving to be a bit of a challenge for both Race officer and competitors.

Terry Curtis put his local knowledge to good use winning the first race comfortably from Tony Thresher and Robert Deaves third. The conditions were clearly to Thresher's liking as he led the second race from start to finish. Current World Champion Nick Craig had pulled through the fleet from an average start to take second with Mike Edwards third.

With Curtis, Thresher or Craig able to take the event, the pressure was on for the final race. Race officer Nigel Garland decided to open things up by setting a square course forcing the fleet out into the main current. Curtis chose the leeward end of the line and just managed to squeeze into the lead as the fleet stacked up on the favoured windward shore. By the leeward mark Curtis had quite a substantial lead, but was forced right by a shift, the following fleet lead by Craig, Edwards and Deaves rounded the bottom of the square and were lifted left. By the windward mark they were back in contention, with Craig leading back down the run, Edwards second and Curtis now in 3rd. Craig managed to hold his lead to the finish to win the event, taking home the Yeatman Bowl.

Report: Robert Deaves

Now in its 37th year, the Mason Cup for OK Dinghies was sailed at Overy Staithe Sailing Club overnight on the 16-17th June. As is traditional it was sailed on high spring tides, that in Norfolk occur in the evenings and mornings. Thus the first start at 7.00pm allowed for a leisurely Saturday. Light winds dominated the harbour courses with the first race going to Pete Turner after extending his lead throughout to win by a considerable margin. Alex Scoles just held off Terry Curtis for second. The second race followed a similar pattern with Robert Deaves finding more pressure on the left of the first beat to round first and gradually extend to win from Curtis and Scoles.

OSSC OK startline, photo: Paul GoakesAfter curry, beer and five hours sleep, the next start at 7.30am was set out to sea in slightly more wind and an incredibly strong tide. Jon Fish made the best of the first race by sailing furthest inshore and leading throughout. Most of the fleet had helped repair his boat overnight after he found one of the many groynes in the harbour and ripped his rudder fittings off in the first race on Saturday. Deaves pulled through Curtis and Turner into second place, but after initially heading for the wrong downwind mark, allowed Scoles, who had moved up four places on the last beat, to take second place.

With any of four boats capable of taking the Cup, the final tense race brought Turner to the front again after an excellent start. He led throughout with Deaves overhauling Fish on the second beat to take second and second overall. On equal points with Deaves, Turner won the cup for the first time.

Fifteen OKs arrived at Hunstanton for the Open Meeting and World Qualifier event on the weekend of 9/10th June to be greeted by an easterly force 3/4 churning up a lumpy chop in The Wash.

Neil Goodhead got of to an excellent start in race 1 and arrived first at the windward mark, closely followed by Julian Burnham with the rest of the pack in hot pursuit. After a slight navigational error, Burnham found the fleet sailing over him and dropped back down the fleet. Goodhead held the lead until the end of the 2nd beat where some sneaky tactics took Terry Curtis into the lead, Goodhead found himself pushed back to mid fleet after been forced the wrong side of the mark. Curtis then went on to win with John Fish taking 2nd and Tony Rich in his brand new Scoles boat coming in 3rd.

Race 2 passed fairly uneventfully until the last reach, where Alex Scoles dropped back from 3rd to 8th after capsizing following a toestrap failure. Curtis took line honors followed by Fish, with Simon Childs finishing 3rd. Race 3 saw Curtis win again with Fish following close behind. Sunday saw a foggy start with less wind, Curtis managed to win race 4 making him event winner, Fish clung closely to his tail throughout the race with Goodhead working his way into 3rd place. Race 5 saw a new winner with Goodhead taking the lead on the 2nd beat followed by the usual suspects. Fleet lightweight Alex Scoles the won race 6 leaving the overall results as above.

In the Classes 50th anniversary year, 13 OK's took part in the Southern Area Championships at Christchurch Sailing Club on May 20th.

Race 1 started in a light 5 knot breeze from the south-west. Jon Fish, sailing his brand new Aardvark OK, was over the line early and failed to return - scoring an OCS in the race. Deryck Lovegrove led a pack of boats out to the right on the 1st beat while World Champion, Nick Craig, worked the shifts up the middle. The right side was clearly favoured as Deryck led around the windward mark, followed by Christchurch helm, Dave Evans, with Craig just behind in 3rd place. The chasing bunch was not far behind but a tangle at the top mark allowed some boats to get away cleanly while others, notably John Meadowcroft from Henley SC, lost valuable ground on the leaders. The leaders remained in the same order down the run, but on the 2nd beat, Nick Craig managed to overhaul Deryck Lovegrove and sailed away to take the race. Deryck held onto 2nd place, Evans over stood the windward mark on the penultimate beat as the tide began to turn allowing Curtis through to third. Evans finishing in 4th place.

Race 2 started in similar conditions. Again, the right side looked favoured and Terry Curtis came in from this side with a narrow lead over Nick Craig. Mike Edwards from South Staffs was 3rd with Dave Evans close behind in 4th. At the leeward mark, Dave Evans had overhauled Edwards & Craig by taking the right side of the run and was now in 2nd behind Curtis. By the end of the 2nd beat, however, Craig's speed had pulled him back into 2nd behind Curtis, with Evans still comfortably in 3rd although, by now, some distance back from the 2 leading boats. Down the 2nd run Craig closed up on Curtis and managed to slip through at the leeward mark. Evans was unlucky to get rolled by the chasing bunch and found himself back in a pack of boats occupying 3rd to 9th places.

The final beat saw Craig round 1st with a 15 second lead over Curtis. The chasing group, some 40 seconds back, was now led by Dave Rollinson from Bowmoor sailing club. The final run saw Curtis close up on Craig and a gybing match ensued, with Craig defending the inside approach to the leeward mark. At the finish it was Craig who held on to take the race - and the event, with Curtis 2nd and Dave Rollinson 3rd.

The final race of the day took place on the ebb tide which brought the left side of the beat into favour. The tide also caught a few boats out on the start and Jon Fish & Dave Rollinson were both OCS at the start. Craig, taking the left side of the beat, rounded 1st with a comfortable lead ahead of Mike Edwards, Neil Goodhead and John Meadowcroft. Nick went on to complete a clean sweep of race wins with Neil taking 2nd and John Meadowcroft 3rd.

A small fleet of OK Dinghies braved the Stormy weather to attend the OK Open at Newhaven & Seaford on Sun 13th May. The sea state had calmed considerably from the previous day making launching from the shingle beach possible, if not straight forward. On the water conditions were an ideal force 4 gusting 5 from the east, great surfing conditions!!

The race officer set a P course with 3 gybes to make sure things stayed interesting. Terry Curtis won both morning races from John Meadowcroft & Dave Rollinson. After lunch 2 races were held in slightly windier conditions, but with a slightly less taxing starboard hand triangular course. Meadowcroft dropped out due the gear failure, Curtis completed the day with a clean set of results to win the event, with Rollinson in second place overall.

Silver Wing Sailing Club hosted 11 OK dinghies for an Open Meeting on 29 April.

In light breezes with frequent large windshifts, Terry Curtis made the best of the conditions in the first 2 races to score two wins and take the meeting with a race to spare. Ian Harris managed to overhaul Deryck Lovegrove to take second in the first race and Harris again provided the main challenge to Curtis in the second.

John Meadowcroft took a distant third in race 3 finally getting the better of Julian Burnham and Alan Atkin.

In the final race Curtis found the wrong side of some big shifts early on and got stuck mid fleet. Harris and Meadowcroft had a long battle for the lead which was finally settled in favour of Harris with Lovegrove and Atkin holding off Curtis who had finally found his bearings.

As ever the warm welcome and the hospitality from the home club members was excellent.

Dabchicks SC once again welcomed the OK fleet for the first of four World Qualifying events of the year. The prize for qualifying will be a trip to the Worlds in Warnemünde, Germany next year.

Race 1 on Saturday started in glorious sunshine and a force 3. Terry Curtis rounded first pursued by Keith Byers and Mike Edwards. Curtis showing great speed was never challenged, with Mike Edwards second and Neil Goodhead just holding off Dan Ager for third.

Race 2 and the wind increased slightly and once again Curtis led from start to finish. Ian Harris chased Curtis hard into second, with Dave Carroll making a welcome return to the class finishing third and Andy Turner proving he still has it in a blow in fourth.

Race 3 and yes you guessed it, Curtis led at the windward mark, followed by Harris and Carroll. On the first reach Ager found another gear and blasted past four or five boats into second. At the finish Curtis held a commanding lead with Ager in second place. Harris showing good speed finished third, with Byers who has returned to the fleet after a few years rest in fourth.

Sunday dawned with beautiful sunshine and little wind. The fleet launched and eventually made it out to the racing area, as the wind died completely. Having waited for a while for the sea breeze that never materialized, Race Officer Peter Fitt abandoned and the fleet got a tow home. So Curtis with three bullets took the honours, from Ager second, Edwards third and Harris fourth.

The OK Class Association would like to thank Dabchicks SC and all the volunteers for making us feel so welcome as always.

24 OKs from 5 countries arrived at Royal Yacht Club Hollandia over the Easter weekend for their annual Spring Cup. They were treated to 8 great races over 3 days against a top quality international fleet. This combined with perfect race management and a couple of entertaing socials for just €50 made it an event to remember (again!). A couple of boats from new UK builders also made their debut, adding further interest to the event.

Day 1 was contested in a variable force 1-2. Darek Kras (Pol) and Janusz Stobinski (Pol) motored off in the first race, with Nick Craig heading the pack in third.
Race 2 saw Brits first to fifth at the first mark, and a 1,2,3 at the finish line. Jon Fish in his new Aardvark hull lead all the way until the final beat when Nick worked his way past with Terry Curtis taking third.

Nick took race 3 in similar fashion, this time overtaking Tomas Glas up the last beat with Terry grabbing 3rd from the chasing pack.

With appropriately large hangovers, the fleet set sail for Day 2 in a solid force 4 and sunshine. After an OCS on day 1, Karsten Hitz (Ger) showed impressive downhill pace to take all three races, with Nick and Terry chasing hard in second and third in all three.

Day 3 dawned with slightly less breeze (thankfully for many weary bodies). Nick just got in front of Jon at the first mark and lead to the end. Karsten passed Jon on the reach, but had to settle for second. After a good tussle, Jon just took third from Terry

Nick finished the event with another win in Race 8 pulling past Jon and Tomasz Gaj in his new Alex Scoles' hull. Karsten again pulled through the fleet downhill to take second and second overall.

The OK's staged the first regatta of the classes 50th year at Oxford SC on Feb 10th. Thirteen hardy competitors braved the snow & ice, with boats travelling for as far afield as Morecombe & Bristol to compete, their efforts were well rewarded with mild weather 5-10 knots of breese & occasional sunshine rounded off by the very competent race management of the host club.

The first race was lead from the start to finish in the lightest winds of the day by Dan Ager of Waldringfield SC showing good speed & making the most of the shifts. Nick Craig of Frensham Pond overhauled Alex Scoles of Overy Staithe to take 2nd with Terry Curtis of Upper Thames just off the leading pack in 4th.

Craig made the best of the start for the second race leading Curtis around the windward mark. Whilst Curtis was always in contention Craig sailed a controlled race to win from Curtis 2nd & Dan Ager 3rd.

In Race 3 Nick Craig showed why he is World Champion, pulling out a comfortable lead in the freshening breese, whilst Curtis fought hard to hold off the challenge from Ian Harris, Ager & Scoles. Craig went on to win the race & the event, Ian Harris was first Veteran, Dave Rollinson from the home club won the Old boat prize.
