			It felt like Spring had finally arrived as competitors arrived at Dabchicks for the first OK Open meeting of the year, with the sun shining brightly in a deep blue sky giving a feeling of warmth whilst  we rigged our boats.

			  As we sailed out to the first start, we were made aware that it was still only April. The chilly force 3-4 wind, combined with ice cold spray thrown into the cockpit when hitting the short choppy seas reminded me that I should have worn my drysuit.
			  </text>

			  After a short delay, race officer Peter Fitt got race 1 underway, with most of the fleet struggling to stay behind the start line due to a strong outgoing tide. Simon Childs arrived at the windward mark first, closely followed by Andy Turner, Neil Goodhead and the rest of the fleet. Positions stayed mainly unchanged throughout the race until the final reach to the finish, when Turner managed to sneak through Childs to win in the final minutes of the race.

			  Following a short break, race 2 got underway, again with a strong tide across the start line. Again Childs rounded the windward mark first, but this time managed to hang on to the lead to the finish, with Turner, Goodhead and Simon Shaw close behind.

			  With the cold wind getting the better of me (told you I should have worn a drysuit), I decided to giver race 3 a miss, along with fellow competitor Adam Wilson.  So I don't fully know what happened in the third race, but I do know that Delboy Lovegrove led for most of the race but eventually let Childs through to win both the race and the meeting, with Turner finishing third.

									<text>Day one saw 35 sailors from 8 nations and 3 continents heading off into a south westerly 3-4 that was a bit of a sharp awakening to those who'd snoozed through a long cold winter.  Race officer Eric Vliegenhaart was on his usual sparkling form and set crisp quadrilateral courses with a mile long beat.  Turtle Wilcox holed out with two bullets and a second on the day with Terry Curtis getting a first and two seconds.  Brits who'd plainly been in hibernation were Julian Burnham and Tony Thresher, who were both suffering up the long beats but bounced back into form when the when the wind fell a bit lighter on the second day.  In the shifts of the off-shore breeze sailors had to decide whether to go with the shifts or hunt for pressure and once again Turtle had the answers, floating up through the pack for a perfect score.  Andy Turner hit the front (finished third) in race 4, and Tony Thresher was back to form and pace as he mixed it with the leaders in race 6, moustache sparkling in the sun.

									<text>That was the last of the sun:  Day three opened with a stiff, chilly northerly, and a weary ok fleet, after a hard evening's hospitality in the the Brokeboere didn't take much convincing that an early prizegiving would beat going for a sail! Overall, Turtle Wilcox  took it from Terry Curtis with Rene Johansen (DEN) third.  Next were two more Danes, Stefan Myralf and Christian Hedlund and this trio look like they didn't waste the winter:  fit guys with well-sorted boats.  Tomek Gaj (6th) lead a contingent of four Poles, with Darek Kras (9th) also on the pace, but just behind Hans Elkjaer (SWE), a regular at Medemblik, who'd made the long trip south wth Bengt Larsson, who showed the true OK spirit by capsizing on the start line in race 4 (particularly thrilling for Simon Shaw (GBR, 24th) who was expecting to sail through that little patch!).

									<text>The oldest sailor in the fleet, Alan Atkin (70 this year, congratulations Al!) just pipped the youngest, Jan Beckmann (GER567), and it was particularly pleasant to welcome back Robert Bancken (NED638) after far too long an absence from this event.  Brad Johansson (CAN500) was way down as he struggled to reassemble a borrowed boat as fast as it shed bits, but it was great to see a North American representative out on the track and we're sure he'll be loads quicker in a boat that holds together!  Brad's working in Belgium and fellow club members Ronny Poelmann and Paul Verrijdt performed consistently for 20th and 25th respectively.

			<text>A small but perfectly formed and competitive fleet arrived at MHYC for the open event.  Racing on Saturday started in a perfect force 4 with good sized waves.    Tight courses meant that boat handling came to the fore making the most of a good start Gavin Waldron developed an early lead.   Downwind conditions allowed places to change throughout the race.  Final positions were Waldron 1st, Tony Woods 2nd, Keith Byers 3rd</text>

			<text>Race 2 - competed in similar conditions, with Waldron again forging an early lead which he maintained through to the finish, followed by Woods and Byers once again.</text>

			<text>The first of the 2011 World qualifiers took place over the weekend 
			of the 22/23 May at Largs Sailing Club.    The forecast was for light winds 
			and glorious sun.</text>

			<text>A highly competitive fleet took to the water for the first race after 
			a short postponement to allow the breeze to fill in.    Race 1 - immediately 
			after the start the fleet split into two distinctive groups with the inshore 
			sailors taking advantage, hot out of the blocks was class secretary Andy Turner 
			closely chased down by Mike Edwards.   The light winds and shifty conditions 
			proved testing with places changing on every beat.   Approaching the windward 
			mark Edwards finally got the better of Turner right on the line to claim 1st 
			place, Turner taking second and Keith Byers just piping Tony Rich to take 3rd.

			lead until the finish, followed by Edwards and Tony Rich 3rd with Neil Goodhead in 4th.

			from the off, with Daz Prior this time fighting through to take 3rd place narrowly 
			pipping Byers who finished 4th.

			<text>Day 2 - Race 4 - the day started with very light winds resulting in a 
			postponement.  Once racing started the fleet again split into 2 groups with 
			the off shore group gaining advantage of the light conditions.   Andy Holmes 
			rounding the windward mark first, followed by Byers and Turner.   In a steadily 
			decreasing breeze the wind swung round with Byers taking full advantage to finish 
			1st, Tony Rich pulling through to 2nd with Turner 3rd and Mike Edwards 4th.

			<text>Race 5 - proved to be the windiest of the entire weekend, Conditions were 
			extremely shifty with the windward mark being placed towards Great Cumbrae.    
			With excellent speed Neil Goodhead rounded first and pulled away on a gust to 
			create a cushion from the pursuing fleet.   Remaining positions were closely 
			contested and changed hands throughout the race with Goodhead maintaining a 
			long lead to finish 1st, Turner 2nd, Tony Wood 3rd and Edwards 4th.

			I can't quite think how we came to be racing in the harbour on a 7.9m tide but 
			the lack of water rather spoilt the open meeting, particularly for visitors who 
			didn't know where the deep water was.

The weather was ideal with a force 3 Easterly and brilliant evening sunshine for racing 
on the Saturday.

In race 1, after a 40min delay waiting for more water,  Pete Turner took off from the start 
line closely pursued by Alex Scoles and Robert Deaves, with Andy Turner struggling to catch 
up after a capsize on the beat with a jammed mainsheet.  Dave Cooper, Steve Whitby and Steve 
Leigh were also playing catch up.

The race finished on a run with the first three boats all covered by half a boat's length, 
giving the race officer (Jerry) some cause for alarm.

The course was changed for Race 2. Alex Scoles was soon in the lead, followed by Andy 
Turner and Robert Deaves.  Alex promptly ran aground near buoy B which let Pete Turner 
into the lead, only for him to be fouled by a non racing RS something or other with no 
knowledge of either etiquette or the rules which dropped Pete to third and promoted 
Robert Deaves to first and Andy Turner to second (on the finishing line).  This incident 
was most unfortunate as had Pete maintained his position he would have won the whole Open Meeting.

After a barbecue Saturday night, Sunday dawned with less wind but still in an easterly direction 
and brilliant sunshine. Alex stayed in bed. First round the windward mark was Steve 
Whitby, which made him change his mind about his lack of boat speed and concentrate
 more on sailing in the right direction! Andy Turner finally showed good upwind speed, 
 closely followed by Dave Cooper picking the right track and Robert Deaves.  Robert took 
 the lead on the next tricky beat, only for Andy to pass on the run to win the race.  Robert 
 was second and Dave Cooper third.
 		</text></para>

Any of three competitors could still win overall at the start of race 4.  Robert led off the 
start line but was caught and overtaken on the run by Andy, with Pete in third.  Unfortunately 
at the start of the last beat Andy ran aground near Norton buoy, letting Robert Deaves into the 
lead, who won the race and the meeting overall, with Pete in second claiming second overall on 
the last race placing, and Andy in third.

						<text>What a fantastic weekend hosted by Weymouth SC. </text></para><para><text>
With a perfect breeze, fine waves, and well set courses, the battle for the worlds 
places intensified with some close racing for all but 1st place where yet again a 
master class was meted out by Terry Curtis.</text></para><para><text>
Terry 2 beers just couldn't be caught, leaving the battle for the runner up spots 
between the trailing fleet. Julian Burnham showed early promise in race 1 gaining 
an excellent 2nd place with Jon Fish some way back in 3rd. Race 2 saw a close battle 
between Fish and Harris for 2nd and 3rd and the same again for race 3. Every race was 
contested hard with the likes of Gavin Waldren showing serious upwind pace again, Simon 
Cox greatly improving to lead at the windward mark on occasion, and Tony Rich showing 
he's there in the mix too with a string of consistent 4ths. The 3 races back to back 
and an extremely long beat home to the club left many shattered sailors almost too 
tired to enjoy the excellent evening out organized by Jo and Terry Curtis who must be 
seriously congratulated along with their local landlord for a very appreciated meal 
and evening back at their country home.</text></para><para><text>
Sunday dawned with the threat of some serious wind and a few nerves in the dinghy park, 
but actually it turned out to be an even better day than Saturday. Slightly more wind 
and freer reaches made for some brilliant planing conditions. Race 4 was headed by Fish 
and Harris who sailed high toward the wrong mark losing distance and joining the race 
back in the pack. Curtis said many thanks and zoomed off to notch up another win, with
 Fish and Harris regaining their composure to get back to a hotly contested 2nd and 3rd. 
 Race 5 was led by Curtis from start to finish, indeed we could hardly see him when he 
 finished, perhaps he fancied the pint he'd left on the bar the night before. Whatever, 
 Terry 2 Dinners stunning performance was matched only by the stupidity of Harris who 
 went for a little swim handing Fish another 2nd for 2nd place over all.</text></para>

Of note were a couple of younger OK skippers who are beginning to demonstrate some pace,  
and who are definitely on the way up the fleet. In trying conditions Ed Bradburn and 
Richard Burton worked hard and deserved their positions near the front.</text></para><para><text>
Given the complexity of the other races being held at the same time, there has been a 
bit of a delay in recording the final results. The over stressed results team at Weymouth 
were still trying to establish the results as the majority of the OK fleet headed for home. 
However, our serious thanks must go to the race officer and crew, and all the members of 
Weymouth SC for a truly memorable weekend. It really was fabulous. Thank you very much indeed.

			<text>Race 1 got underway with Richard Burton, one of the home sailors taking 
			the lead from the start. Midway through the race, the wind dropped off, allowing 
			Sam "Half Pint" Blocksidge to take the lead. Places changed constantly for the 
			next lap, but Half Pint managed to hold his lead to the end leaving Richard Burton 
			2nd and Adrian "Rodney Trotter" Walker 3rd followed closely by Ollie Burrows 
			taking 4th.</text>

			<text>There was very little wind for the start of race 2, causing Sam Thomson 
			to be OCS as he battled to make the start line in time, Eleanor Davies got off 
			to a great start and rounded mark 1 first, with the lads chasing to catch up. 
			By the 3rd mark, the wind had changed direction 180 degrees, allowing Richard 
			Burton to take the lead, this was to be short lived, as he then decided to start 
			showing off by removing his rudder, claiming he had got stuck in weed. This 
			disastrous move allowed Rodney Trotter and Half Pint to sneak through to take 
			1st and 2nd place, leaving Richard 3rd and Eleanor 4th. Meanwhile a small dogfight 
			was developing for 5th place between Ollie Burrows and Piers Smith with Upper 
			Thames's Edward Crichton close behind.</text>

			<text>Race 3 got under way with the pressure on Richard Burton, needing a 
			win to secure the title. Rodney Trotter took the lead after an excellent 
			first beat, followed closely by Eleanor, Half Pint and Richard. Rodney started 
			to pull away, whilst Eleanor had a blonde moment and started heading for the 
			wrong mark, allowing Half Pint into 2nd place. Things then stayed much the
			 same until the last lap, when a thunderstorm and torrential rain swept in 
			 giving a slight increase in wind strength. The race officer very wisely 
			 finished the race promptly leaving Adrian Rodney Trotter Walker as race 
			 winner, and Youth and Junior Champion, with Sam Half Pint Blocksidge as 
			 runner up after taking 2nd place in the final race. Richard Burton retired 
			 on the last lap due to been worried about getting his hair wet which left 
			 3rd place for Eleanor.</text>

			<text>The day was finished off with a fish and chip supper followed by table 
			tennis and pool tournaments. Big thanks must go to West Oxford Sailing Club 
			for hosting and running the event, a great time was had by all. A special 
			thanks must go to everyone who loaned and transported there boats to this 
			event.</text>

			<text>This being my first travelling outing of the year, it was rapidly evident 
			that my skills have not improved and as the results sheet indicates this report 
			is written from the perspective of the back of the fleet. Detailed evidence of the 
			battles at the front of the fleet were therefore not fully observed except when these 
			hot-shots crossed my path well ahead of me !</text>

			<text>Twelve boats turned up, on a bright and sunny-ish morning with a North 
			Easterly breeze of about Force 3 which blew fairly constantly throughout the event, 
			with occasional slight increases. We were all on the water for an early start at 1000 
			hours on a course using most of the Clubs many buoys. Local lad Richard Burton (WOSC)  
			showed everyone the way, on his home lake, followed by Neil Goodhead (SSSC) and backed 
			up by another local lad, Chris Murray (WOSC) in third.</text>

			<text>The second race (back to back) was got underway promptly at around 1100 hours, 
			but this time the local lads switched their positions with Chris Murray taking the 
			line honours and Richard Burton taking third spot, and allowing Anthony Rich (Oxford SC) 
			through into second. During the second race Simon Davis (UTSC) gave his beautiful brand new 
			Alex Scoles-produced boat a full immersion baptism due to the main sheet being cleated 
			as a small gust hit him. This earned him the prize for the silliest thing to do during the day !

			<text>After a short lunch break, the third race was efficiently started by our Race Officer Mike 
			Roberts at about 1300 hours. The points from the morning races were such that Neil Goodhead needed 
			a win to take the event title, and he took the lead from the start and never relinquished it. 
			However Simon Davis, after his morning ducking, was determined to show that his new toy was quick, 
			and came through to take second, not far behind Neil, and Richard Burton came home a consistent third - 
			the only competitor to be in the top three for all the races.</text>

Race 1</text></para><para><text>
At the second attempt race one got underway in a very shifty northerly brisk breeze 
of between 12 to 20 knots. The first beat proved testing as the windward mark was 
laid very close to the shore. Andy 'Rover' Rushworth making a welcome return to the 
OK's led off the start chased by Terry 'TopCat' Curtis. The right-hand side paid and 
Rushworth led round the windward mark, closely followed by Anthony 'Titch' Rich, Curtis 
and Richard Burton. The first reach was a question of who picked up the gusts and Curtis 
passed Rich with Mike Edwards pulling through to fourth passing Burton. Rushworth maintained 
his lead at the gybe mark and maintained it until half way down the second reach.  Edwards 
came through to leeward and caught Curtis by the bottom mark. The next beat proved to be 
the final leg with some really big shifts, along with varying strength of wind, which kept 
everyone on their toes. Curtis pulled out a small lead from Rushworth and Rich. Curtis took 
the bullet due a shortened course and Rich just pipped Rushworth for second. Ed Bradburn 
picked up a big shift on the right to pull through to fourth with Edwards finishing fifth. 
Event organiser and local hotshot veteran Chris 'Dogsbody' Arnell was nowhere to be seen 
in tenth. Ian Harris recovered well to finish sixth after capsizing twice at the start which 
also won him the Brixham Bonnet for the most ridiculous act during the day.

The second race followed a similar theme with major shifts throughout the race. Gavin 
Waldron from South Staffs led round the windward mark, closely followed by local has-been, 
event organiser &amp; general dogsbody Chris Arnell. Julian Burnham took a shift at the top 
of the beat to round third. Arnell was in front by the wing mark, but Burnham showing good 
off-wind speed was in front by the leeward mark. Once again the course was shortened after 
2 rounds, a big shift from the left brought a raft of boats in from the left hand side, but 
a shift back shortly before the finish brought Waldron back out in front to take the gun from 
local hero, organiser &amp; dogsbody Arnell. Curtis picked up some breeze to come in third from 
Burnham in 4th and Ian Harris in 5th.

		Day 2
		</text></para><para><text>
Race 3 started in a 3 to 4 north westerly, with the course set further from the shore than yesterday. 
No one can remember anything about the start as it's been a long day, except that, apparently, 
the pin end allowed some brave hearts to cross the fleet on port! Mr Dave Evans, a true gent 
with a classic OK, complete with varnish and a metal mast showed the rest of the carbon and 
epoxy strewn fleet the way round the windward mark, followed by Tony Woods and the unflappable 
Curtis.  Also showing great speed, Tony Rich and the John Fish (making an appearance after stopping 
at his new house to do some decorating rather than go sailing). Fish soon showed some class to get 
himself to 2nd, miles behind Curtis who yet again offered a masterclass in horizon jobs. A close 
battle between Ed Bradburn and Tony Woods was spoiled by the late starting Harris who nicked 3rd 
from the others, although being chased by Rushworth, who had looked good until nature called on 
the reach.

Race 4</text></para><para><text>
After the tea-break, the race officer got the second race of the day away, at the 3rd attempt. The 
committee boat end was slightly favoured, in contrast to previous races. The race was largely uneventful 
- Curtis won again, but without the horizon job. The next 5 boats mixed it up, with Waldron and Tony 
Rich featuring strongly. However, by the finish, Rushworth, sailing a boat that he didn't build had 
stayed upright to take 3rd, just in front of Julian Burnham. Resident editor, Ian Harris motored 
through to take his second second of the event, and stay second overall. So much for needing a new 
mast and boat...</text></para><para><text> 
Special mention needs go to Sir Dave (Evans), who after having had his fantastic first race, decided to 
jettison himself out of his boat at the windward mark, slightly damaging his second race result, 
and most of the boats around him.

Day 3</text></para><para><text>
Day 3 dawned with the forecasted 30 knots gradually building, resulting in some of the more 
inexperienced making what would finally turn out to be a wise decision.  After a postponement 
the 5th race got underway in about 18 knots with a short chop on top of the swell that had built 
up overnight.  John Meadowcroft crossed the fleet making a guest appearance in Jon Fish's boat 
as Fish was called away on business, but Curtis had recovered from being shut out at the start 
to have a short lead over Rushworth by the first mark.  Ian Harris and Keith Byers were very 
close behind.  Tony Woods, Burnham and Waldron passed Meadowcroft on the first reach and stayed 
in that order to the bottom of the triangle.
</text></para><para><text>On the second beat Richard Burton picked all of the shifts and closed 
up on the leading pack and by the bottom of the run there was a close pack of 6 boats chasing 
Curtis, showing his superiority and pulling away.  By the top of the second beat Curtis led, 
followed by Rushworth, Harris, Byers and Waldron, With Burton and Woods close behind.  At this 
point the forecast wind kicked in to around 25 knots, with the fleet planing into the swell.  
Ian Harris had a wobbly moment into a big wave &amp; took a swim which cost him dear, whilst 
Rushworth had a brief swim at the gybe mark, but had enough of a lead not to be caught by 
Byers.   Curtis sailed away revelling in the conditions with Rushworth holding out to second.  
Waldron overhauled Byers with 2 tacks to the finish to snatch 3rd, with Richard Burton holding 
on to 5th &amp; Tony Woods coming in 6th.

Day 4</text></para><para><text>
Race 1</text></para><para><text>
Lighter winds and sunshine were the order of the day.  The fleet getting away on the first gun under black flag.  Places changed constantly with shifty breeze finally filling in from the left side.  Andy Holmes popped out which resulted in a healthy lead around the first mark followed by Martin Bower and Tony Woods.  Setting off on the first reach Bower gybed first and headed towards the bottom mark taking Holmes to lead.  With again lots of place changes on the second beat, sailing the shifts paid.  Bower remained in front at the windward mark and headed down the run with Holmes still maintaining second place.  Edwards had been picking up places and was up to third.  On the run Edwards had more pace and rounded the bottom mark in the lead.  The final still shifty beat was a test of nerves, with Edwards covering the fleet successfully to take the gun, with Holmes sailing very well to snatch second, Bower third, Curtis fourth and Tony Woods fifth.

Race 2</text></para><para><text>
The fleet approached the line on a black flag start with the fleet spread right across the line. Those that chose the pin looked good off the line, but those that hitched across to play the middle right looked favoured as the race progressed.
</text></para><para><text>In the last third of the beat the pressure came from the right and newcomer to the fleet but a sailor with an International pedigree Robert 'Load &amp; Lairy' Campbell-Gray steamed in on starboard to round first. Tony Woods played the middle and rounded second with Ian Harris 3rd. Those that had chosen the left were looking very sorry for themselves with Curtis rounding second last.  Woods managed to gain an overlap on the wing mark to lead, with Campbell-Grey still second and Harris and Ed Bradburn catching in more breeze.  On the second reach many recovered with the breeze filling in from behind. Woods maintained his lead but the distance had been reduced massively.
</text></para><para><text>On the second beat, Harris nailed every shift to pass Woods and Rushworth worked his way to second.  On the run, the calculators were out with 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th positions all up for grabs. On the last beat the pressure was telling with positions changing with every shift.  Harris kept his cool to take the gun and second overall, with Woods passing Rushworth on the final shift to second, with Bradburn 4th and 71 year old Alan Atkin an excellent 5th.  A truly testing day that stretched the nerves of the entire fleet.

			<text>Saturday morning saw a fleet of 10 OKs turn out at Ardleigh SC for tea, 
			bacon sandwiches and some sailing. Conditions were sunny, with a chilly force 
			3-4 northerly breeze. Race 1 saw Simon Cox take an early lead at the first mark, 
			followed by Paul Church, then Andy and Pete Turner. Robert Deaves read the shifts well up the beat 
			to take the lead, with Andy and Pete tussling for second place.
Robert took first place with Andy second and Will Turner moving up the fleet to take third 
place on the last beat.

Race 2 started after lunch in similar conditions. Will Turner got a flying start from the committee 
boat end and held the lead for most of the first lap (with the help of an untimely capsize by Simon Cox), 
before sailing into a black hole in the shadow of some trees around the leeward mark.  Paul Constable was also well
 up at the first mark, but some impromptu swimming took him back down the fleet  
The fleet bunched up as they hit the doldrums, and Pete Turner managed to extricate himself from the 
pack to take the lead, with Dan Ager and the rest of Team Turner snapping at his heels. Back in the 
breeze and Deaves' upwind speed pulled him back to take the lead and finish first, ahead of Pete and Andy.

The wind strengthened going into race 3, and Cox squeezed through on port tack at the pin end to give him 
the edge up the first beat, chased round the windward mark by Andy Turner, Dan Ager and Robert Deaves. Cox 
took time out for a quick swim (along with most of the fleet at some point during the race), letting through 
Deaves, Turner and Ager.  Deaves pulled away to secure his third win and wrap up the day's racing, with a 
whole new day's racing to look forward to at Waldringfield on Sunday.

			<text>Waldringfield gave a wet welcome to six OKs for the Cartoon Trophy on 
			Sunday 26th September. Five of the contenders had the benefit of warming up 
			at the Ardleigh Open Meeting the day before (allegedly).
</text></para><para><text>
The first race, in a gusty F4 saw the fleet fairly quickly split into two halves, 
with some close racing between Robert, Simon and Dan, who eventually finished in that order.  
After a decent first upwind leg, Dave dropped back after rounding the windward mark the wrong way. 
</text></para><para><text>
The second race, sailed back to back, repeated the earlier course. Simon led to the first mark, the 
race soon becoming a two-horse affair with Robert, whose superior boat speed enabled him to take 
the gun in his habitual manner.  A battle developed again between Andy and Luke: whilst Luke held 
third during the downwind legs ultimately experience triumphed over youthfulness.

Following lunch, land comforts got the better of Dan, Andy and Dave; leaving a rather depleted 
fleet to sail in a moderating F 3 -4 and heavy drizzle.  Luke managed to power through from a 
leeward start and led to the first mark, only to have trouble locating the second bouy, and taking 
Simon upriver with him, leaving Robert to establish an unassailable lead and a clean sweep for the 
weekend as a whole.

The event was predominantely held in light offshore breezes, with significant shifts 
making for some Challenging sailing. GBR's Nick Craig was leading after day one with 
a 4 point cushion from Greg Wilcox NZL who was 1 point clear from IRL's Tim Goodbody. T
he days 3rd scheduled race was abandoned due to the failing wind.

3 of the scheduled 4 races were completed on day 2, with conditions again very light &amp; 
tricky. Craig sailed consistantly to maintain his lead although Wilcox had managed to
close within a point with Tomasz Gaj from Poland moving into third and Goodbody 4th.

The forecast rain had arrived by Sunday &amp; with it a decent onshore breeze building to 
around 20 knots, kicking up quite a confused sea. The fleet set out to the racecourse 
with the prospect of 3 tough windy races to shake things up a bit. Tim Goodbody showed 
he meant business to take the bullet in spite of seriously overstanding the windward mark 
on the second beat, Craig took second with Poland's Pawel Pawlaczyk in 3rd &amp; Terry Curtis 
from GBR 4th. Disappointingly the Committee boat was having difficulty holding anchor in 
the lumpy sea's and brought the fleet home after only one race. Craig ended the event a 
worthy winner, successfully defending the title from 2009. Many thanks to the team at TSV 
for a great weekend &amp; for making us all so welcome.</text></para><para><text>

			<text>A reasonable entry of 27 competitors arrived through the mist at Pitsford 
			Reservoir for the OK Inlands.  The mist cleared and a shifty force 2 breeze filled in, 
			backing during the day from westerly - straight down the reservoir, to south westerly - 
			across the far bank.</text></para><para><text>
Race 1 soon saw Terry Curtis in the lead chased by Mike Edwards, Ed Bradburn and Alex Scoles.  
However after an hour's race those of us a bit further back got the message that Ed and Mike 
hadn't gone through the start gate and Alex was OCS. This left Andy Turner in a fortuitous 
second and Richard Burton in third.</text></para><para><text>
The second race had a rather one sided beat mostly on port tack which Terry eventually won 
after a hard fight with Ed Bradburn who was going like a train and Tony Woods third.
The last race of the day was the most shifty.  Mike Edwards found some speed but fell back 
late in the race. Robert Deaves worked his way into third at the finish with Andy Turner getting 
second and Terry another first.</text></para><para><text>
Day 2 dawned overcast and raining with a south west wind around force 3 and again very shifty. 
Again at the front in race 4 were Ed Bradburn, Terry Curtis and Robert Deaves with Richard Burton 
showing considerable speed, particularly upwind.   Julian Burnham had a pleasant swim whilst getting 
over zealous by the committee boat.  Eventually Terry finished first with Ed second and Robert third.
Race 5 saw Tony Woods power into the lead up the first beat and establish a good lead but he started 
looking over his shoulder and adopting covering techniques, always a bad idea, and fell back to 5th.  
Tom Lonsdale, another junior from West Oxford had a storming race and finished 8th. Terry won the race 
with Ed Bradburn recording his third second place finish and Mike Edwards third.</text></para><para><text>
Race 6 was the windiest of the weekend, up to a force 4 in parts.  Terry stormed off up the first 
beat but Julian Burnham found the correct route and arrived a close second at the windward mark.  
These two were never more than a few feet apart all the way round, but Julian couldn't break Terry's 
monopoly of first places.  Alex Scoles had his best race in finishing third after Mike Edwards barged 
in at a mark once too often and had to do turns, as did Richard Burton.</text></para><para><text>
Many thanks to Northampton SC for some slick race management and excellent catering.  We hope to be 
back next year.</text></para><para><text>

			<text>On arrival at South Staffs Sailing Club the fleet was met with no wind and sun 
			causing the race officer to announce a sensible half hour postponement allowing the 
			OK fleet to fuel up with coffee and bacon butties.

A strong fleet of 20 boats with many junior and youth sailors present took to the water 
for the 11.30 start. The light breeze had built up to 5mph and 20 degree shifts were present 
all over the lake. After the customary general recall the fleet got away under black flag with 
Neil Goodhead nailing the start and first beat to round with a commanding lead. Mike Senior 
was second with Tony Woods third. On the reach Goodhead stayed low towards the island with 
Senior staying high for more breeze. Both benefited with Woods in the middle stranded with no 
wind as the rest of the fleet sailed up on one of the bigger gusts of the day. On the next 
beat Goodhead pulled away even further into what looked like an un-assailable lead. However 
this wasn't a day for un-assailable leads as first Senior and then Mike Edwards whittled the 
lead down. Senior took the gun as Goodhead regained his composure to take second and Edwards third.

After a short lunch break the fleet started with a heavily biased port end line. Being 
able to tack on to port as soon as the gun went was going to be the secret and Senior pulled 
it off superbly. He led with Edwards, Goodhead, and Ed Bradburn all challenging for second. 
Senior pulled away and built up a substantial lead before Edwards and Woods who had recovered 
from a poor start challenged for the lead. Edwards got the better of Senior upwind to take the 
win with Senior second and Woods third. Bradburn senior took 4th spot with the last tack of the 
race from Bradburn junior showing there's still life in the old dog yet. Oh how Ed was pleased 
for his father!

Race 3 got underway with Dave Cooper going for an outrageously dangerous start under black 
flag. In a white boat he might have got away with it, but luminous pea green? Not a chance as 
he was sent home for an early shower. Woods and Senior battled for the lead with Senior hugging 
the shore for more breeze to round first. Woods was second with Edwards third. On the next beat 
Senior and Woods pulled away from the rest of the fleet and were never caught again. The battle 
for third seemed to be a battle royal with Alan Aitkin, Edwards, Goodhead, and Gavin Waldron, 
all having their moments. Despite Edwards doing turns (a new experience for Mike) after causing 
a pile up at the mark; he showed his speed to take a deserved third and second overall. Mike 
Senior had taken the Open Meeting for the second year showing an understanding of the lake 
that nobody could match. Under trying conditions the South Staffs team had laid on a superb 
meeting with their usual high standard of organisation.</text>

Race 1 got underway along with the Solution fleet, which were annoyingly slow. With an island 
right in front of the start line Terry Curtis and Julian Burnham went right along with the rest 
of the fleet, clearly the correct way as Terry rounded first with Jules in tow and Deryck Lovegrove 
and Andy Holmes shortly after. Terry pulled ahead of Jules who both had a huge lead. Richard Burton 
eventually caught up after taking a mid race swim. Burton got into third but then was overtaken on 
the last beat by Derek.

Race 2 followed a delicious lunch. The OD decided for a change of course the line was port end biased 
which Burton and Terry nailed. With some different islands half way up the beat Terry rounded the 
windward mark first with Burton chasing hard and Jules not far behind. In the end Terry held his lead 
with Jules planing past Burton to take second, Deryck 4th and Holmes 5th.

Notably junior sailor Jack Arnell, borrowing his uncle (Chris Arnell)'s boat  was going very fast and 
challenging for 4th and 5th all the way but lost out at the end.

Race 3 was the most competitive of the three with 4 different people in the lead. Burton and Jack got 
off to a great start at the starboard end of the line. The left side of the course was favoured with 
Burton and Terry duelling for the lead, but out of nowhere Deryck (who went as far right as he could) 
shot in to round first with Burton right behind and Terry nipping at their heels. On the reach Burton 
took the lead and then Terry had his go at the front. After misjudging the windward mark and parking 
on it, Jules caught up and took the lead. But Terry whittled it away again to take the lead. By this 
time Deryck was taking a break at the back of the fleet, with Roland Gadsby and Holmes fighting for 4th. 
On the last beat Terry lead Jules left and Burton went right. Which paid off: he passed Jules only to 
be pipped on the line again. Deryck regained his composure to finish 4th </text></para><para><text>
Terry 1st, Jules 2nd, Burton 3rd, Deryck 4th, and Roland 5th.

			<text>Due to the 'Big Freeze' last winter the OK Winter Championships were re-scheduled for 13 November at 
			King George Sailing Club. For some this was an end of season event, and for others the start of a winter 
			training schedule with the 2011 OK World Championships held in Largs Scotland in focus.

The first race suffered from a slight delay as the young team from West Oxford look as they need an alarm 
clock on Santa's Christmas list. In a light shifting breeze the fleet split to each side of the course. Two 
thirds up the beat Andy Turner and Tony Woods looked good on the left whilst Nick Craig and Alex Scoles 
were the best of the right. Despite holding a good lead Turner and Woods just couldn't get in to the windward 
mark on port and Craig led with Scoles chasing hard. Neil Goodhead recovered well to take third position 
on the downwind leg and kept the pressure on the leaders. On the next beat Craig extended his lead with the 
middle right again paying. Scoles had found some boat speed and pulled away from the rest of the field. 
Just when all the results looked sorted as the fleet sailed around the last triangle of the course the 
results were turned inside out by some odd navigation. Craig had rounded the wrong wing mark, and like 
sheep the fleet had followed. The only sailor to spot the mistake was Richard Burton, who whispered to 
his Club mate Tom Lonsdale who headed up to the correct mark. Andy Turner benefited by having his hearing 
aid on maximum volume and followed the young guns to the mark. The rest of the fleet realised their mistake 
and headed up eventually. Craig however had made a fatal mistake with a lead that was too big and hadn't 
realised what was going on. On the last run Lonsdale led from Burton with Turner staying low in more breeze. 
Turner managed to get in front at the last leeward mark and headed to the favoured right on the last beat. 
Lonsdale and Burton headed to the left with Woods in fourth going up the middle. Woods managed to find more 
breeze and passed all three boats and took the gun from Burton with Turner in third.

The second race got away with Woods tacking away from the committee boat end to head to the right. He 
established a good lead around the windward mark with Craig in second and Scoles in third. These positioned 
remained for the next lap. On the penultimate beat Craig caught Woods on starboard forcing him to the left. 
Not following him back to the favoured right was his mistake as he lost out to Craig, Scoles and Goodhead 
within a short period. On the run Goodhead showed why he is such a light airs specialist and showed excellent 
speed to get into second. This is how it finished with a last race decider all set up.

The last race start saw Craig squeezing Woods off the line from the committee boat end, but neither had 
spotted a shift at the start as Turner and Scoles tacked from the pin end to take the lead. It was all 
to play for on the run as you could throw a blanket over the fleet. On the next beat Turner extended his 
lead with a scrap for second between Scoles, Craig and Goodhead. On the last run Craig tried everything 
to get to second which would have been enough to take the Championship. Scoles and Goodhead weren't about 
to do him any favours and fought hard for every inch. Turner took the gun and looked on as he hoped Scoles 
or Goodhead could hold second. His club mate Scoles did the trick and this meant that Turner was crowned 
2012 Winter National Champion, and secured him the 2010 Travellers trophy too. Quite a season for 'young Andy'.</text>
