That all makes sense, and in terms of cost I half suspected with the masts being layed up by hand is why they cost so much. Same as the Alan Jackson ‘Chipstow’ mast for merlins £1,200 +, but work very, very well.

Personally I don’t have a carbon mast as this would not make economical sense in terms of what I paid for the boat although if a second hand one came on the market for £3/400 quid then I would no doubt jump at the opportunity as carbon not only just looks sexy it makes a huge differences in terms to boat handling and righting after a capsize.

My ODonnell boat came with a red top, but given my 14.5 stones I suspect this is completely the wrong set up?
