hi Doug. the cutouts will reduce it by nearly half a kilo but having dumped all the big heavy bolts,pulleys and ali lever , stainless loops etc the total all up weight is reduced by 1.5kg . and anyone who thinks that’s not a lot try holding that amount of weight on a 2 metre cane.
that’s a massive leverage load in torsion around the mast base right at the front , i’m hoping to give it all a run out on boxing day. It is not my intention to use this boom over 20-25 m.p.h. as I have a small rig with a short boom for windy stuff . I’ve not had any ‘nice’ boatspeed weather since getting my latest boat (1835 -Skinner) as it’d been windy on both occasions. BUT at 60kgs /five foot four and closing in on 70 years with a 42 year old boat in 25 gusting 30 m.p.h. if i’m the same way up as everyone else i call that a result !!- I will let you know my outcome – I did make a grp vacuum foam sandwich boom which weighed in at 2kgs. fantastic up to force 2 then it bent like a bow- Mmm drawing board – mind you it only cost £20 to make !!
