I think there are too many sailing clubs all offering the same thing in ever decreasing membership numbers – logically something is broken..
Within 40 minutes of Burghfield SC I think there are 10-15 OK’s sailing at 7-8 clubs. Identifying why those sailors wouldn’t want to travel an extra few minutes once/twice a week to get quality fleet racing is puzzling. Do sailors get emotionally attached to sailing clubs? Do sailors actually only want to race against Solos and Lasers? Lots of questions which I have no answers..
I would have no issue with moving clubs if the quality of OK sailing was high and its was within 30-40 minutes, but at the moment Burghfield offers the biggest fleet close to me.
I’ve attended loads of open meetings over the years and while I didn’t go to Sunderland I can see similarities with a few other clubs I’ve visited – Paignton, Portchester, Weir Wood, Spinnaker, Parkstone – its venues like this which always get me going back.
Unfortunately changing something which is so ingrained within the sailing community is virtually impossible (certainly in the UK) I see some sailors in other countries happily drive 1-2 hours to get high quality fleet racing virtually every weekend.
