1998 was Henry’s boat. A pale blue colour if I remember correctly. It was only the 2nd or 3rd GRP OK built by Hoare’s from the Trevor Gore (K1959)mould.
Henry was only an average sized guy but was quick in all conditions & I think top 5 at the Nationals in those days. Providing the hull is in reasonable nick you’re getting a good boat.
I really don’t think the weight of the helm is a factor in deciding which hull shape is best suited to you. A full bow might be a tad harder to drive upwind in light sloppy conditions – allegedly – but I never felt disadvantaged against other boats in mine. Actually, my best Nationals result in many years was the final race in Sunderland last year where I blagged 2nd in very light winds. My upwind speed is better than my downwind which contradicts everything you’ve been told about the characteristics of the Hoare shape. (Terry & Alex Scoles would routinely take a lot of distance off me downwind in planing conditions even though I could match them upwind)
If you can, sail a couple of boats. I’m sure you’ll “feel” the difference between the various shapes and maybe one of them will be your favourite. Personally I think the jury’s out on whether any of them is quicker (I’m currently sailing my son’s Hein and getting better results in club races than I do with my Hoare, although the Hein has an old blue-top needlespar and a 2002 Ullman sail – go figure!)
