My boom sits around about 5-6 inches of the aft deck when fully tensioned and I have never found this to make my boat go slowly, If your boat feels balanced then I suggest you try it at that

P.S I know it is a bit of a trek, but it would be really worth your while bringing your boat to the South Staffs training weekend in October so you can compare your boats set up against other OKs
