    Hi Kev,
    We probably need to know a bit about your boat first… Is the mast aluminium or wood?
    The really fundamental thing is to make sure the mast is going to stay put: the bottom step needs to be in good nick and there needs to be some way to keep the mast in place (even when the boat is upside down !)
    The usual way for boats the age of yours was a peg & cut-out arrangement something like this sketch:
    [attachment=0:3rmg9yix] maststep.jpg [/attachment:3rmg9yix]

    So the peg engages in the step (goes in with the mast back to front) and then when the mast is right way round it can’t pop out. Dunno if that looks familiar at all?
    The other bit that needs to be well attached is the rudder, and it also needs something to keep it on while you are practising your swimming. Diehard traditionalists like me have a little placcy clip, but trendies use a piece of string!
    Sorry if this is all too obvious, but I’m assuming you’re starting at a fairly low baseline here!
    Whereabouts are you? It would be really good if you could link up with other ok sailors to help get your boat sorted. I’m sure anyone would be pleased to help.
    Dave
