I’ve been contemplating a return to sailing, now that the end is almost in sight for my youth squad taxiing duties.
I owned an ok many years ago and it would tick all the boxes for me now, especially with the big attraction of Largs in 2011 to aim for.
I was really enthused for a while and had started to seriously consider the options, but the main hurdle for me, as highlighted by Tony, is the cost of a new carbon mast, which really does seem prohibitive, especially for anyone considering going down the route of upgrading an older boat.
For sure, there is a premium to be paid for the performance of carbon, but the NZ$ price plus vat, import duty and shipping is a killer. Shame really as I’ll can’t really see a way round this and can only see myself falling back to the boring option of another L*****.
I wonder if others are being discouraged from joining the class for similar reasons?
