I agree with your comments about the current OK boom dimensions – i am sure that we can source oval section booms that will do that job & is more readily avaialable. The risk of relaxing the rule completely is that you could unintentionally instigate an arms race. I would suggest investigating the dimensions of currently available sections & then adjusting the rule to allow those that look most suitable – My watchout would be to check they are capable of taking the kicker loads.
Additionally i wouldnt count out Carbon.
From the discussions i have had with spar makers, it is possible to supply a Carbon boom for approx the price we are currently paying for a metal one – i will investigate this further and see where it leads.
