I think you will find the OK an excellent choice for the River. Having sailed most fo my life on the Thames, the OK’s manoverabilty makes it very effect upwind & the unstayed rig efficient downwind.
For £1500 you should be able to get a good boat in the 2000 numbers. It is unlikely to get you a carbon mast, but a well tuned metal one will meet your needs well.
I would recommend looking for Rushworth, Heine or Odonnel boats. All have their merits – The Heine boats seem to last particularly well.
The mast step is generally the place that goes first, although boats of this era will should be ok.
