Some tricky sailing today with lots of place changing. Also the competition hotted up as Robert and Dan appeared along with the sunshine and a force 1-2.
In race 1 Robert had an excellent start extricating himself from the bevy of boats of assorted classes on the start line. Andy and Lee were also up there at the windward mark but Dan had to go back and start again. Eventually (I think) Lee took over the lead. On the second lap Paul Constable got himself in the frame and at one point there were 5 OKs abreast going down the run. On the third lap Toby Ramsay had an excellent beat and got himself in the lead down the last run. Lee, lying second, hit the mark and did a rather crap 360, Paul Constable and Robert Deaves rounded next. However Lee wasn’t finished yet and as the leading four covered each other up the last beat took an alternative route to finish first.
Race 1: 1st Lee Child; 2nd Robert Deaves, 3rd Toby Ramsay; 4th Paul Constable; 5th Andy Turner; 6th Paul Church; 7th Dan Ager; 8th Tim Hurst.
Race 2 was fine until the wind disappeared on the second beat. Robert cut out any errors and sailed very well to build a commanding lead, only loosely threatened by Paul Constable. The rest of us were in a big heap going nowhere, scattered across the reservoir searching for ripples. Eventually Toby Ramsay rounded off a good day with third place, followed by Dan, Lee, Paul Church in his newly refurbished Hein (2064) and Andy. Tim retired early to the bar.
We waited behind at the end for the overall prizegiving. Twelve OKs took part in the Winter Series and Lee Child won convincingly with eleven race wins from the 20 races. Andy was second on the hare and the tortoise principle. Paul Constable was third having sailed consistently well through the series. Toby Ramsay really got his act together towards the end of the series to finish fourth and Tim Hurst, who was always out there battling, finished 5th.
Overall results Ardleigh Winter Series: 1st Lee Child (Dabchicks), 2nd Andy Turner (Overy Staithe); 3rd Paul Constable (Ardleigh); 4th Toby Ramsay (Dabchicks); 5th Tim Hurst (West Mersea); 6th Dan Ager Waldringfield); 7th Paul Church (Harlow Blackwater); 8th Drum Sydenham (Dabchicks); 9th Matt Cock (Dabchicks); 10th Robert Deaves (Waldringfield); 11th Simon Davis (Upper Thames); 12th Trevor Child (Dabchicks).
The Ardleigh Frostbite Series starts on Sunday 6th January and lasts for 10 Sundays (20 races, 12 to count). Hopefully we’ll be joined by a few more OKs wanting some practice before packing their boats into the container for the Worlds in Thailand.
