Reply To: How thin can the decks be?
I have tested the spring balance scales I have been weighting my boat with by filling up plastic 2 litre bottles with water and found that 20 litres of water does weight exactly 20kg on my scales. I have taken into account the weight of the plastic bottles which I weighted separately and then deducted from the reading on the scales. Both my spring scales show exactly the same weights.
So I have elimited there being any error with the scales.
I have added weights to my boat to represent all the remaining items which need adding to my boat (eg the deck and other items etc) so that nothing has been left out of my caluclations. This means that my measurements show the complete weight of my boat and therefore how much my boat is over the 72kg minium weight.
The weight of my boat as a completed boat is currently 82.5kg so I have 10.5kg to remove.
I am going to have to start the process of reducing weight in the boat next weekend by sanding off any excess paint and as much of the glass epoxy in the bottom of the boat as I can. I will then re-weight the boat and see whether this has made an improvement.
Before I started replacing the bottom of the boat the boat weighted 72.03kg!!
