I have it attached to my tiller with thin shock cord just long enough to hold it vertical once it is through the hole in the pintle on the boat. On mine it goes through the bottom one. By keeping it vertical it can’t hit the rudder and so never bends and can never fall out. It is also very safe and easy to put in and take out.
I used to have the retaining clip on the transom or even on the rudder but always found it awkward and it liked to remove bits of my fingers as well.
