After Hunstanton last year when we had the same problem I bought a smart lifting rudder from Alex Scoles which I’ve been using ever since – so much easier getting afloat because you can tie it on before you even launch and don’t have to take it off when coming in. The lifting rudder weighs the same as a fixed rudder. There is no slop in the blade.
You can put a fixed rudder on the top pintle while you sail off a beach but it almost always bends the top pintle on the boat which never really recovers – I would advise against doing this.
