Alton Water Frostbite Reports.

Well I have achieved my goal, we did get our own start for the Series. 8 boats had pre-entered and this qualified us for our own start. 2 were missing today, Luke Farthing an Rob C-Grey so we had 6 boats out. Lee Childs, Simon Davis. Dan Ager, Dave Rose, Simon Cox, Ken Carroll.
We know we have Robert and Dave Bourne to add to the list on their return from Australia. Hopefully we will get to see John Ball and maybe Simon Shaw. Come on Guys join in the fun.
Well we sailed today in very light winds, ghosting at times. Lee made the best of the first race taking the win. There were plenty of place changes for the other positions. Race 2, in slightly more wind, was won by Dan Ager. He made the best of the first downwind leg keeping to windward of the little fleet who were all bunched together. He sailed away in his own little breeze never to be caught.
Hopefully next week we will have more breeze and we can look forward to some great racing over the winter months.11th January 2015 at 2:04pm #7967
Bit of wind for sailing today, complete contrast to last weekend. Only 4 OK’s made the start Ken, Lee, Dave Rose, Si Cox. Some other OK owners were in attendance but decided the wind and cold was just to much for them today. Race 1 started and all 4 had good speed up to the windward mark with Lee rounding first and Rose close on his transom Cox third and Carroll just behind. The next leg was a very broad reach almost back on ourselves. Positions stayed the same to the mark but Cox managed to get tangled up with a laser on rounding and went for a swim.
Ken held onto the starboard tack whilst Rose and Childs tacked over to port. Some distance into the beat, when closing on the mark, Ken had clearly closed on the front pair only to have an incident that ended up with a wiped out Laser and Ken doing turns that he found difficult in the remaining space to the mark. The next leg ended the race for Rose who decided he was better off going for a swim instead of sailing his boat. Cox was now in second place and Ken who was recovering from turns closing in on the run. The second lap and positions were established when Ken was totally wiped out to windward and decided that enough was enough and retired. As the remaining 2 continued to race Cox found some good speed and closed right down on Childs. Child went on to take the gun and Simon a very close 2nd. Well done boys. Race 2, Rose and Carroll decided that they had had enough and with really good excuses which they just invented did not take part and went home for an early bath. Childs and Cox were involved in a good race until Cox decided he also wanted to swim and retired soon after. So Lee had 2 wins which he fully deserved. Next week hopefully we will be back to full strength and see our numbers on the start line increase to all 8 currently registered. Ken.
It was nice to our Secretary Andy and Tim Hurst (in your boat next week Tim) on the shore today giving us some support.11th January 2015 at 3:35pm #7968Si CoxParticipant
There were some big gusts today. Bit of a shame that Dan and Simon Davis were too chicken to sail.
Ken, thanks for giving me an excuse but disappointingly having seen the on-board video footage I can’t blame the Laser for my capsize in the first race. Just sheer incompetence. The camera moved position so the footage isn’t worth editing unfortunately. I’ll modify the gantry for next weekend. The second race was going quite well until the toestrap decided to untie itself. Personally I am blaming Finn for that as i’m sure he must have untied it when he borrowed the boat!
Tip for the day – when you wear a drysuit make sure you zip it all the way up!11th January 2015 at 4:26pm #7969leechParticipant
Great fun and nice friendly club. We’ve had 2 extremes of wind speed now so next week promises to be force 3 (and 20 degrees)
Shame I missed you Andy, our synchronised capsizing must have kept you entertained. Mine was a halfhearted gybe in the lightest wind of the reservoir! :roll:17th January 2015 at 5:26pm #7970DaveBourneParticipant

Light winds yet again this weekend, 6 OKs took to the water with Bob and Dave Bourne turning up as promised. We started with the Lasers again this week and Si Cox made the best of the start and rounded the windward mark first. He sailed away and never looked like he would be caught. Dan Agar almost made up the gap, he sailed very well making gains on all legs to finish a close second. The remaining boats changed positions a few times but no major gains were to be had and all finished within a few boat lengths of each other.
Race 2 and Robert Deaves swapped his Finn with Cox’s OK and away we went again for a second attempt at the light weather sailing. This time the Lasers were a little too keen to beat the OKs to the windward mark and most were over the line resulting in a general recall which reverted us all to the back of the starts.
As we were about to start the fast handicap boats were approaching the line, this made the first windward leg interesting to say the least with faster boats climbing all over our weather. Dave Bourne rounded first by some distance with the other 5 all within a few yards of each other. It was becoming pretty much a covering race until in certain places the wind would shift and increase briefly. Robert Deaves, as always, sailed extremely well taking advantage of the conditions which allowed him to mount a challenge on Bourne. Shades of Australia Robert went on to finally beat Bourne over the line. (Sorry Dave, had to put that in!).18th January 2015 at 5:50pm #7973DaveBourneParticipant

In the absence of Ken, I will make a guest apperance as the report writer.
Five OKs started in the first race of the day. Only Simon Cox had a note from his mum excusing him from games, the others will have some explaining to do next week. However we had the pleasure of the company of Luke Farthing for the first time this year. Rob CG also made his first appearance. Before the start of the first race Rob also did his annual boat maintenance, taking off his sail and replacing it with a brand new one. Inexplicably he got Dan to help him. Fortunately he had enough time to re-rig on the water once he had launched.
Anyway to the racing. Again we started with the lasers. I think all the OKs reached the windward mark before the first laser. If we didn’t it was pretty close. Dan was allowed to pull away for the win. Simon Davis not too far behind in second. It is assumed that Simon had domestic duties as he went straight in after the finish. This left the four of us to compete in race2.
First to the windward mark was R CG who to celebrate informed all would listen that he was their daddy or something. It seemed to please him. Luke, Rosebud and Dan followed close behind him. Again most of the laser fleet were behind. The daddy held on to his lead until the second lap when it was the choice of lighting his fag or taking the shift. This let Dan through for another win, R CG in second.25th January 2015 at 6:47pm #7976
Cheers for filling in Dan much appreciated. I have to admit the breeze just did not do it for me this morning or lack of it, so I decided to work on the big boat today. Glad you had a good sail and so disappointed to miss the Daddy rounding first.1st February 2015 at 11:31am #7977
Seems like I made the right decision today. Stayed at home and rode the pusher on the rolling road watching Andy Murray
Just received Text from Dave Rose, racing cancelled.1st February 2015 at 6:29pm #7978leechParticipant
Glad I saved myself the drive up there. I thought it might be cancelled so I drank accordingly last night!! See you next Sunday2nd February 2015 at 5:38pm #7979
Full turnout required next weekend Chaps. Forecast 6/7 Deg Sunny and 12 mph. That’s a bit better than the last few weeks. But like all things it could still change. Keeping my fingers crossed. :roll:3rd February 2015 at 1:12pm #7980Robert C-GParticipant
This weekend’s races were postponed not cancelled so they are going to try to run 3 races this coming w/e and 3 the following w/e to catch up. I don’t know whether that will be too much activity for Mrs. Agar but I’m sure the rest of us will have fun.
