Hi Chaps (and chapesses),
I’m aiming to look at some second hand OKs in the next few weeks, mainly Hoares and ODonnells – as a second boat for club level and the occassional open meeting. I’ve spent some time in Solos in the past and wanted an OK this time. Never had one before. What should I be looking for in an older OK ? Are there (for example) common problems from the design one should look for?
I’m also likely to be `upgrading’ what ever I buy with carbon and new sails etc – any designs more readily upgraded?
Any advice welcomed.

A chap asked almost the same question(s) very recently on this forum.
Take a look in the “Technical” section and follow the “OK Information required” thread. Some interesting comments.
AlanAh many thanks Alan – I found the discussion string you suggested. I didnt think of looking at the technical section for some reason but it was just what I was looking for.
It may be perhaps worth creating a `FAQ string’ on the forum and moving it there?

That’s an excellent suggestion! The forum’s about to get a software upgrade (phpBB3’s about to be released) so I’ll do the change at the same time as the upgrade.
Obvious categories (I think) are: 1. “I’m thinking about getting an OK, what should I look out for in a secondhand boat?”
and 2. “I weigh 138 grams. What sort of a mast (/rig) should I be using?”Anybody got any suggestions about the best way to get the distilled wisdom of the ok class ( :roll: ) into this? Should I move existing posts or would we be better off starting with new topics and everyone adding their thoughts?

As a `very newie’ to the class (no boat yet even) can I suggest the following additional FAQs for consideration – this may be in the class handbook given to members but prospective OK sailors won’t have this yet. Apologies in advance if this seems obvious or inappropriate:
Where are OKs actually sailed in the UK? Not just where the fleets are but where are the class membership. How would I get a trial sail in one? I’m a member at Notts County (and Sunderland), but I may change to say Staunton Harrold, Burton or elsewhere if there were another OK there to race against – and so new fleets are born…
There is no real introduction to the OK on the website – you really have to go to (find) the International OK page if you want to read one.
A Fast Gear Guide – what equipment was used by the first 10 in the Worlds or Nationals) – hull, foils, mast, sails what was the crew weight. This may assist people wanting to buy in at the top end and also assist in guiding the upgrading older boats.
The rig for weight guide you mention would be great.
Perhaps linked, a guide to refitting – ie what to prioritise on a speed for £ basis.
Where can I insure my OK (gives links to any deals the Class may have with an insurance broker and may also encourage membership by indicating benefits) or simply `What are the benefits of membership’
I’m sure more experienced members can think of others.

Welcome to the fleet! I am sure when you have a boat, have sailed it for a while and come to a few opens, you will discover what we all love about the OK.
Your comments regarding the website/forum are also very welcome. It often takes a fresh pair of eyes to identify areas for improvement. So thanks for that.
As bill suggests, come to South Staffs and try one or two. We have the second largest fleet in the country and both good club boats to top racing machines.

WOT! bigger than Ardleigh? We’ve got 13 OKs in the dinghy park now, most of whom were sailing majestically roiund the reservoir in a force 6 on Sunday – we all got thrashed by Will making a guest appearance.
We’ll have them all out sailing at the Winter Champs so put Saturday Feb 8th in your diary and come and get the trophy from us.
Hopefully Dan and Robert will be joining us in the New Year. Anyone else in the Eastern Area is welcome to join us – first Sunday of the Winter Series is Jan 6th.
Yup, I will be there, assuming Alex has sorted out my rudder my then! Can’t see that being a problem – can you?

Long way to come just for 1 day, so will we be able to join in club racing on the Sunday? And I assume Robert will be offering free accommodation & breakfast for all visitors as part of his New Year resolutions?
Yes – there are two races on the Sunday (10.30am and approx 1pm). All OKs coming to the Winter Champs are welcome to stay and sail on the Sunday.
