This is bugging me after sailing today.
Can anybody possibly explain why an ok sails faster by the lee than not?! Today at Ardleigh we were all sailing by the lee on starboard instead of broad reaching on port. Surely the whole point of a sail is that it air is meant to flow from the luff to the leech?
Any valid answers would allow me stop thinking about why it works, so thanks in advance.

During our first regatta of the season here in Wellington while he was putting his rudder on his fingers jammed between the stern and rudder as the boat rounded up in a large gust. End result a nasty compound fracture, bone, blood everywhere. I think he started sailing again a few weeks later with a protective plastic cover over the finger. However in compensating for the injury he strained ligamanets I think in his forearm. I was sailing beside him on a reach during our last Napier regatta when he suddenly rounded up. He’d lost all control of his thumb which had “flopped” into the middle of his palm. He taped it back out but couldn’t use it, I guess he saw a doc when he got back to Auckland who told him it would take a few months for it to come right. A real shame for Mark as he was going great guns in the breeze up until then. So with the injury he can’t do the worlds so is selling his boat. It is my understanding he isn’t leaving OK’s though and will be back.
How many of you guys are coming over? Check out the RPNYC Point Jerningham weather station for a taste of what is to come :)…..it’s howling again today and tomorrow as well I think so might get back out on the water on sunday!

Thats tough on Mark.
There are 7 of us coming from the UK, which is not great, but more than we had early on. I havent been in an OK since the beginning of OCT, currently we have 3 inches of snow outside. I was planning to borrow a boat & go out on Sunday. I hope to get out to sea in Jan, but we will have to see if weather allows – i may just be there for the beer!!
Either way i am looking forwad to a bit of summer weather.Cheers

Don’t worry the beer is all organised I’m told, now we just have to dial up summer for you! Sunny, warm and light winds here though for the next 3 days at least I think…..well sunny and warm anyway

Yes Karl has summed it up pretty well really, but I will be back.
Boat is now sold, but I’ve already bought an older boat to keep me going for a while. Probably won’t sail it for another 6 months or so though… and will get some decent kit again in a year or two when I decide which year suits to have a serious crack at a worlds again.
