Debate: Should the UK consider hosting the 2018 Europeans?
22nd February 2017 at 11:58am #16324
Speaking with the OKDIA it seems like hosts/venues are still being sort for the Europeans next year…How about the UK?
Apparently Mary R. could present a UK proposal at the next AGM..
While I enjoy going abroad I think a major OK event in the UK would really put the OK on the map (in the UK) and offer great publicity to attract new sailors to the class. It seems like there is a lot of positivity around the class currently and adding a Europeans to the mix would continue that trend going forward.
While I’m only looking at the OKDIA site, it says the UK hasn’t held a Worlds since 2011 and a Europeans since 1977!
Why not somewhere like:
* Paignton (friendly and cheap accomodation)
* Penzance/Mounts Bay (big waves)
* Hayling (professional)
* Herne Bay / South East (to make it easy for our EU visitors)
* Mumbles (seems to manage holding big events)
I know there are committees etc to go through, but keen to know any reason the UK couldn’t put a proposal together?22nd February 2017 at 6:25pm #16332
Very pleasing you are showing an interest. Be assured your committee tried very very hard last year to win a bid for the 2020 Worlds. I have attached something for you to read. I hope once you read it you will have more information on planning a Europeans or a Worlds.22nd February 2017 at 7:05pm #16415KazrobParticipant
It seems a fine idea on paper, but from what I’ve seen before mainland European sailors are generally loathed to come to the UK unless they have to, and I would reckon it needs to be close to the cheapest/quickest way across the channel. Cornwall sounds great but it’s a pretty long drive for most of us in the U.K. to start with so for a visitor it’s two extra days driving in effect. Offshore Hayling is great sailing but crossing the bar can be an ‘interesting’ experience in a breeze and big tide and I’ve seen a couple of visiting boats suspended upside down with their masts stuck in the gravel as they’ve cut the corner.
Perhaps we should see how the triangle trophy goes at this years nationals
Having said all that – it may be our last chance before we get kicked out/leave (delete as applicable) Europe! ?22nd February 2017 at 7:26pm #16419
Karen you are correct in your observations and more. Have read of the document. The committee works hard for the 2020 worlds only to lose it to Sweden at the French agm. There is not much enthusiasm right now to go through that again. As nice as it might be to hoist the Europeans

It only caught my interest as currently there are no bids/proposals to host a Europeans in 2018 and my own curiousity got the better of me, so thought I would ask.
Without competition in bidding, cannot the UK OK association just say “we’ll host it” without a lot of the pre-approval processes demanded by OKIDA ? – I’m assuming someone somewhere will have to host it……?
Oh well, will leave the topic for another day, preferably when I have a beer in my hand23rd February 2017 at 12:30pm #16512ChrisBiscParticipant
I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but I believe Europeans are only held in years that the Worlds are not in Europe.
2018 Worlds are in Warnemunde in Germany.
You may have a valid point if you are talking about 2019, although after having what was considered a formality being gazumped in France, I think there is little enthusiasm amongst the hard working committee to try again for a while especially as we have already pssssd off a favourite UK venue by dropping them already.
After Brexit will we allow European Sailors Visas to come and sail here anyway?
Or maybe Europe will decide Brits are no longer Europeans and won’t let GBR Sailors have Visas to go there and show them how to sail23rd February 2017 at 2:12pm #16514AndyMParticipant
Let’s ask Boris?23rd February 2017 at 7:14pm #16520
Chris you are correct. I never even gave it a thought. Worlds are in Germany 2018. No Europeans. Doug you quote, talked with OKDIA and they are seeking a venue? Very confusing mate.23rd February 2017 at 7:36pm #16522
<p style=”text-align: center;”>I should have added, we have in the past held mini Europeans when the Worlds are in Europe. But Chris you are correct. The UK are not keen right now to go back to the drawing board and start again. Hope all finds you well mate. Ken ? might we see you in the UK for the 60th</p>23rd February 2017 at 10:08pm #16527burtParticipant
I think it was passed to hold a euros every year… maybe just tag it onto our nationals… much like the spring cup was the euros last year…24th February 2017 at 10:20am #16529
Ken, the ‘quotes’ to clarify.
Initially from OKDIA re Europeans in 2018: “As yet we have no proposals”
Further Response from OKDIA: “Garda is being considered for the Europeans in 2019 (when the worlds are in NZ) and/or as a worlds venue in 2021. The UK will always be considered (edit:to host a championships). If you have a serious proposal then Mary could present at the AGM. If nothing is submitted by the deadline then the OKDIA Executive could decide the venue, or decide not to have one.”
Happy to drop the subject / not get myself into more trouble!24th February 2017 at 4:28pm #16531
Doug don’t drop it, if you feel strong about it go for it. You should not let what has gone before stop your enthusiasm. I would never be in favour of Garda, why would we wish to sail in a big valley. For me if IOKDIA choose this location it makes a complete mockery of the events manual
