If OK racing is what you do (even if only occasionally), then this email is from me in my role as the OK Eastern Representative just to update you on OK events and updates in our fine region !
We are lucky on the East Coast to have 3 decent builders in Synergy Marine, Idol Composites and Dave Rose and some of the best racing for our dinghy on our doorstep. With that shared expertise hopefully we can get out for some excellent racing and then our little boat will promote itself.
It was suggested during a committee meeting that as a lot of sailing stops at our local clubs in the Winter (especially those on the sea), we should try and consolidate our efforts to descend on one location for the winter to get some proper racing in. Canvassing opinion the general consensus for the Eastern Region was to head to Alton Water SC whos frostbite series runs between the 04th January and 01st March 2015. We expect 8-10 OK’s (plus anyone else who now turns up!) to this great event sponsored by Fox’s Marine and Country. It takes place every Sunday with 2 races being scheduled back to back starting after 11AM. Cost for the series for non-members is £60 plus £25 if you want to leave the boat there in a space which works out at £4.75 a race. It would be really great to see lots of us make the effort as it’s a great bit of water and the club make the effort to have a committee boat start with a proper windward first leg. If we get 8 boats pre-entered then we will get our start which would encourage even more to turn up. I’m sure many will want to keep racing at their own clubs so please ignore if you are quite happy there! (and no before you ask it’s not my own nearest club that I’m plugging !)
Our National Association has an updated website that is really neat at http://www.okdinghy.co.uk (thanks to Overy Staithes Dave Cooper) and the fixtures are listed there as well as there being an active forum.
I’ve listed here those firm fixtures that are in our region (or that are very close!). More will follow as they are added !

Dabchicks Sailing Club Training Weekend 25th – 26th April
Brightlingsea Sailing Club Open Meeting 06th – 07th June
Overy Staithe Sailing Club Open Meeting 20th – 21st June
Dabchicks Sailing Club Open Meeting 11th- 12th July
More on the Dabchicks Training weekend at a later date but keep it free in the diary if you can, don’t let the word ‘training’ put you off as there will be plenty of beer and a relaxed atmosphere.
Finally some other important dates:
The RYA Dinghy show run by Neil Goodhead is between 28th February to 01st March at Alexandra Palace where the class will have a stand. Come and say hi and see the latest ships
We want the Eastern Region to win the club trophy at the Nationals so just to quickly mention that is taking place at Weymouth between 27th – 30th August. It promises to be a great event being run from the best located club in Weymouth (the sailing club within the town just 10 mins from the sailing area!).
Finally Robert Deaves from Waldringfield heads to the World Championships in Melbourne in the next couple of days so I wish him all the best and am not too jealous…..honest……
If anyone wants some advice on the OK dinghy I’ll try and help or point you in the right direction to someone that can or if you know someone that is considering joining our class then give us a shout. Lending them a boat seems to be easiest way to win people over.
Great to have the report, Can I just add to the list, Hunstanton ? Have we a date for this yet please, And I am sure Andy will add Ardleigh later in the year. Best place to sail an OK is East Anglia without a doubt.
