Hi all, as a newby to the class i thought maybe i could provide a bit of an insight into how the class is viewed by non-ok sailors, as maybe this could help to improve the class.
Last year at the dinghy show i was looking around a few singlehanders and was extremely impressed with the OK stand. The new boat looked fantastic with the carbon mast and the hull looked extremely well made. Speaking to people at the stand impressed me just as much, and this ultimately made me realise that i wanted an OK. The boat looked excellent and the people were both friendly and helpful. Other things that made me get into the class, were the high level of competition around the world and the technical aspect of the boat.
With a lot friends staying on the ‘high performance’ route and getting Musto Skiffs, i am quite the boring one in buying an OK! I think that this image needs to be changed. A few examples of this i have found are images of the boat on the internet and magazines. For example, on the Yachts and yachting website ‘classes’ section, the main image on the OK page ( http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/classes/?s=42&c=51 ) is not great; if compared to the solo image ( http://www.yachtsandyachting.com/classes/?s=42&c=57 ) then you would think that a solo was a nice boat than an OK- this is clearly a mis-justice!! I think that there needs to be more images of new boats with carbon rigs, going fast! (as on the homepage of this website).
I hope that this can be seen as helpful and not critical.

I am glad that the effort that goes into Sailboat has made an impact, the modern OK is a quite a sophisticated racing boat that has tried to move with the times & allow sensible integration of modern technology.
The Y&Y class page does have an uninspiring picture. I will drop them a mail & see if we can get it changed.

No carbon mast and it looks like he has a wooden boom and its not sharp.

After all the editing needed to get that photo to look good (i.e. deleting Robert, making the boat look good etc), you’re going to need a new photo…Weren’t there some epic ones from the Worlds? probably not a good advert, but i remember one of Ian Harris disappearing down the mine!

? It’s another great pic, and you can’t see the sail numbers on the leading boat, so you can’t see it’s Karsten Hitz!
The one of Ian doing a crash dive is good, but you can’t see enough hull to get an idea of what the boat’s like!
DaveFish, i expect you think this is a great picture to use, only your own natural modesty stopping you suggesting it yourself!!
If you check out the website, you will find the job is done.
How about that for a fast reaction from the finely tuned publicity machine!!i was actually just writing to say that you cant use that one, as you’ve got too much suffolk-pie-boy editing to do on that… also, think you want to have it with other nationalities in… isn’t one of the attractions the international side of things?
