I am sad to report to the class the news that John Hulmes died on Saturday.
John was a keen member of the OK fleet at South Staffs when I joined it in 1968. I don’t know when he started. He always had a well turned out boat, the first I knew him with was call Aeolian (I think I’ve spelt it properly). He then bought 910 (Ruddy Sauce), which had been Peter Crew’s boat. He sailed this for some time and went to a lot of events with it. His boat after this was 1774, Daylight Come. ( I think he bought it from Alastair McMichael but I can be corrected). He looked after this boat for some time and it was always immaculate in his care.
John was an excellent OK sailor who was always at the front of the club fleet together with some Open Meeting successes and some good Nationals results. He and Wendy supported South Staffs SC enthusiastically for a long time. John stuck with the OK even when the fleet took a down turn for a bit and he is one of the people who ensured that we still have a fleet today.
I miss his very light weather techniques where he used to watch his cigarette smoke and a bit of cotton on the end of the boom that dangled in the water to tell him if he was actually moving. He was a great competitor and I learned a lot about OK sailing from trying to catch him on the water.
When John retired from building work in Wolverhampton he and Wendy went to live in Poole and joined Parkstone YC.
We pass our best wishes to Wendy and their two sons Michael and David.

This is very sad news Bill and the second dedicated OK sailor we have lost in a few weeks.
To add to your comments about John……..I have very vivid memories as a young lad at South Staffs, watching him turnout ‘Daylight Come’ at the begining of the season. Looking on wishing that I owned that boat. I used to ask him how he varnished and painted the boat to get such a beautiful finish. I remember him smiling, taking a drag on his fag and saying a lot of time and love Michael.
He indeed was one of the reasons why I sail an OK today
