Keel band.

Hi there,
I have a composite Hoare (1998). The plastic Keel band has fallen off one side of the centreboard, and is peeling off the rear hog Is the keel band a legal requirement? My Dad says we should leave the keel band off and fair in the holes, but to check up if we are doing anything wrong before hand. Advice please.

Hi Sam
Unfortunatly you do need to keep he keelband as it in the class rules, these can be downloaded from this site under the technical section, the rule you need is 8.4 xiii and reads as follows
A keel band, minimum section 9mm wide by 3mm deep, maximum section 22mm wide
by 10mm deep, of any material shall extend for a distance not less than 3500mm,
measured along the keel band, from the aft face of the transom. The radius of the bow
forward of a point 3500mm from the lowest point of the aft face of the transom,
measured along the base line, shall not exceed 11mm.

I have just remembered that there is a proposal coming up at the next OKDIA AGM which is to be voted on at the worlds in July that could abolish the need for a keelband, so it may be worth holding on a while before carrying out your repairs, Ill keep you posted.

Did anyone make the AGM? Have there been any changes to the keel band rules? Sam Woods.

The proposal got thrown out, I think, Sam: the class rules stay the same. See you at the nationals!

Just to confirm, the keelband proposal at the 2008 OKDIA AGM did not get get through, so this means you will need to retain your keelband. I am fairly sure you can buy lengths of aluminium band which you just screw on, this is probably the easiest option.
