Northern Championships at Morecambe SC
13th and 14th September
A small, but perfectly formed, band of intrepid OK sailors braved the challenging forecast and arrived on Saturday well in time for the first race. With the wind blowing from the South the sea state was flat, if gusty. Unfortunately due to low numbers the planned fleet sailing was shelved and the OKs joined the main handicap fleet.
Race 1 – Olympic course set, with a strong incoming tide, Neil Goodhead made the best of the start and romped into an early lead which he held for two laps. A windshift on the penultimate beat brought Ben Steel right onto Neil’s transom with Ben winning through to narrowly take the race.
Race 2 – The wind for race 2 increased dramatically and changed direction to the South West causing the OD team to shift the course layout. With the wind gusting force 6 race 2 got under-way. AS the tide had turned it was wind against tide and standing waves – the fleet of OKs revelled in these conditions. Keith Byers rounded the first mark fractionally ahead of Ben and Gavin Waldron, with long broad reaches on the large waves this was exciting sailing and challenging gybing. Gavin took the win narrowly beating Keith into second place with Ben a close third and immediately capsizing along with Neil with both taking the opportunity for a lengthy hull inspection and buoyancy test.
Race 3 – The waves got even bigger with the committee boat struggling to remain on station and the majority of the main handicap fleet called it a day and watched the OKs battle out the final race of the day. Keith took an early lead, chased by Ben and Gavin. Lap 2 saw the three OKs side by side surfing on the run wondering who was going to gybe first! Keith and Gavin gybed successfully whilst Ben decided to go for a swim. Keith decided to capsize on the leeward mark allowing Gavin through to take the win.
After a evening of table tennis, pool, darts, dominoes and connect 4 – Paul and Carol Pike claimed the MSC Games Night trophy.
Sunday dawned much calmer. Race 4 – sailed in a southerly breeze. Keith took an early lead, followed by Gavin & Ben Steel with Keith maintaining this position to take the win.
Race 5 – the final race once again saw Neil take a large lead and maintain it to the finish, followed by Gavin and Ben.
Overall results 1st & OK Northern Champion, Gavin Waldron, 2nd Keith Byers, 3rd Ben Steel, 4th Neil Goodhead 5th Paul Pike. The Oks also performed well in the handicap results with Gavin coming out as overall winner of the Castlegate sponsored Open event, Keith 3rd, Ben 4th, Neil 5th.
The OKs must have impressed over the weekend as the OD was last observed perusing the second hand boat list!
