does any one now where the pics are for the weekend would like to have a decent look i know there where loads taken
Hi Richard,
Sorry, I bust my camera last weekend (zoom switch packed up) so the only pix I got were long shots of the yjc R1 start.
I’ve got a couple of CDs coming in the post from Adam Wilson and Dave Taylor (too many pix to email). Gav took a lot but Neil only sent 2 because he said the rest were too dark (dunno why he’s fussed – a quick trip through photoshop and it’s a nice sunny day however it started off!) The guys who took the video that Nick critiqued were going to take some stills, but I never heard any more of that so I think they didn’t. If I had the movie I could lift stills from it, or someone could do that for me. Bit frustrating, really. I’ll post pics on the website as soon as I have them, but until I get them there isn’t much I can do.My tactic in the past has been to take a camera along to opens and send it afloat with a rescue boat crew or the committee boat (or anyone else I can get to take it!) That only works if I’m there, I’ve remembered to bring the camera, they can be arsed/aren’t too busy to take pics and they can work a camera they haven’t seen before, so it isn’t exactly foolproof! If anyone’s got any suggestions about how to improve the process, I’d be really grateful! Also it looks like the current going-afloat camera could be a goner, so anyone got any suggestions about a replacement?
This one was a Toshiba PDR 2300 (not brilliant), the one before that was a Minolta Dimage X21 (total crap for this job!) and the one before that was a Fuji MX1300 (Far and away the best so far. Unfortunately I can’t even find another one on Ebay. Think maybe they’re all dead by now!).Anyway, that’s how it is. Hope I’ll have some pics up in a day or two. If anyone else has pics and can send them, go right ahead! Don’t worry too much about the quality – I can do all the usual processing stuff. Only thing i can’t fix is if they’re blurry.

As Dave says we took lots of photos, far too many to email roughly 100 for each day! they were put in the post box to Dave yesterday morning so hopefully there should be some on the website soon.

Davethanx guys yeah that is me with adam siting there the reace i got dq’ed lol next year it will be mine hahaha i hope
BTW, Richard, were all the DSQs for the same thing (sailing between the limit mark and tha committee boat)? because there have been 7 DSQs all year in the OK results and 5 of them were on Saturday which seems like a pretty high number!
(The other two were me forgetting to tally on for the last day of the nationals :oops: :oops: )
Davei think so chris tooley and me where and the the others i think to i think they should be discounted personally haha. some nice annoying photos for me to reflect on ha of me winnning then not winning the failing generally
If the RO didn’t want people sailing through inside the distance mark, you’d think he could just ask them not to at the briefing, though why it matters at all is beyond me. Maybe someone from South Staffs can explain it.
DaveThe Idea of an inner limit mark is to prevent boats bunching up against the committee boat obstructing the race officers view of the start line, Tony also explained this at the briefing, and I also heard him remind people at lunch time. I am also fairley sure that this in the Sailing Instructions, but I do not have a copy available to confirm this. The inner limit rule is not purely used at South Staffs, I think it is used at the World and other events. Moral of the story is Read the SI’s and listen at the briefing.
On the pictures, I am editting them at present an will make them available when I have done them, but there are alot of them and this can be quite time consuming, I also have al the Video I took but again this will need editting, I will make this available over the next few weeks.
Regards Neilthanks neil but passing through it with a few seconds yes but at 50 when everyone is not on the line is annoying but i accept that i was lawfully dq
I think if I’d been the RO and I’d DSQ’d 25% of the fleet, then on the basis that the job is to run enjoyable racing rather than to trip people up, I’d definitely be reviewing whether I needed to leave that requirement in the SIs and if I really did, how to get the message to the competitors a lot more clearly. Apart from that, the RO was top class so I bet he’s thought about it too. Certain to have done. I’m sure the other thing (

) that won’t have passed him by is that if you get a pile-up at the committee boat end it’s because you’ve set a starboard biased line, and it seems a bit tough to blame the sailors for that
Davewell i guess i should hae listened but the rule just seems odd to me personally like you have said stop peoplle bunching and for the commity boat to get a good veiw of the line the veiw will always be the same tbh but just one of thoose things
