Question for OK Sailors at Burghfield

I am hopefully joining Burghfield SC this week and taking my boat down at the weekend.

The trailer that came with the boat consists of a launching trolley with a towing trailer that seem to ‘fit’ together. They cannot be used as a comby. (the launch trolley sits on the towing trailer as long as the wheels are removed and it’s lifted on without the boat.)
After speaking to Burghfield SC there doesn’t seem to be anywhere to put my mast, apart from strap it to the deck, leave it up, or leave it on the ground.

Are there any OK sailors that keep their boats at Burghfield, and if so how/where do you store your masts if you haven’t got a comby trailer set up?

Hi Phil,

I leave my mast up most of the time, with the boat just on its launching trolley. The dinghy park spaces have tie down points, so it’s normally fine like that. There is an area for you to leave your road trailer.

Occasionally I do leave the boat and mast all loaded up on the trailer if I’m dropping it off after being away at the weekend, but we’re not supposed to as the trailers take up quite a bit of room in the dinghy park spaces and make it a bit difficult for the boats around you.

I’ve not found anywhere else to leave my mast at the sailing club, but might ask around before winter. I’ve found that with the mast up rain water runs down the mast into the boat. Not a problem in the summer so long as you prop the bow up at the right height and open the bailers, but in winter it never really gets warm enough to get rid of the moisture. That’s my theory anyway, but it just seems that if in winter you pack the boat up on a nice dry sunny day without the mast in the boat stays dry and the woodwork copes better. Always helps of course to leave the inspection hatches open, etc.

Anyway, enough of the boring stuff. Please do email me and let me know when you’re going for a sail. I’ll try to organise getting all of us out at the same time for a few of the club races. Alan (Atkin) is sailing in the Wednesday night series, and Deryck Lovegrove is local and interested in joining (just won’t completely admit it yet!). My sailing this summer has been even more occasional than last year, but should be doing some Sunday club races through July and August. It’s a great club to sail at, so fantastic news to be having something of a core of OK sailors forming.

Where have you been. ive not seen you since the winter.
How about coming to Upper Thames at the weekend, bring the family, your wife can drink pimms on the lawn & watch us wresting with the cows, the trees & the crusiers.

Phill,

As the boat will be on the trailer why don’t you come to Upper Thames for the open meeting? It is only 20 mins away from burghfield and you can always drop the boat off at Burghfield on your way home on the sunday. The racing starts at 1pm on Saturday and although we should have about 20 boats the racing is pretty low key with all levels of ability taking part.

There will be people around to help you get the boast on and off and it will be a good opportunity to ask any other questions you have about the boat.

Hello all!
Sorry I’ve dropped out of touch a bit this year, been busy with family, work, etc. Will be at the nationals though.
Saturday is busy for me this weekend but trying to get to Upper Thames on Sunday, would a day entry be ok? If so, what time is first race?
