Re Fitting Bailers

Hi Folks

havng removed all the fittings off the boat prior to all the sanding, filling, sanding, filling, sanding Painting etc etc, I am about to start having the fun and games of putting them all back!!

Just wanted to ask what folks advise when fitting bailers, do you use a dab of silicone or just used the rubbers seals and nip the nuts up tight (not over tight).

Also whats best to fill in the screw heads and gaps on the underside, I thought I would use thickened epoxy and then fair it down.

Your thoughts & advice greatly recieved.

The rubber gaskets do usually do the job as long as the skin thickness of the boat is consistant – if in doubt silicon will do the job.
I find whatever you put in the screwholes eventually clomes out, so i just use polyester filler which is quick to apply & easy to rub down – then accept the fact that i will need redo it every year.

all the boats i ve fittted bailers to I have used the rubber gasket inside, and then put a bead of sealant around the hole externally, as the body of the bailer sits in place. You have to keep it as a clean smooth bead all the way round though. We have an adhesive cleaner at work (much like acetone but less agressive) by 3M which is good for wiping excess away if you go wrong – it may be available from a hardware store?

As Terry says, this is all based on the assumption of course that the gaskets are new and in good order (the bolt holes are particularly suseptible I find)! If in doubt it doesnt hurt to put some sealant on the inside too.

A good point on sealing the bolts I suspect that a bit of sealant is probably a good idea, so I will add a little. I just hate the stuff it seems to get everywhere.
