Think we should have more gossip here

fellow class members
i have studiously followed the face book postings from afar but so far have yet to see the witty banter or other chat that used to make this site the place to visit.. not sure that there’s has been anything outrageous that encourages discourse, neither have we seen the amount of technical .,…. what should I do ……. questions that always got the fleet engaged. Pictures are great but at the end of the day it is the conversations between those that are class members that matter. I would probably have attended a couple more open meetings with someone nagging on an open forum and there used to be a ……..where are the golden balls training this coming weekend and can this old sod come along and cause you all to have a safety worry!,!!
Not sure how many members we have but I would suggest that we need to go back to the website as a source of gossip, entertainment and communication. At the moment it looks like we are loosing the sense of community that is the heart of the class.

Absolutely right. This used to be a really lively and interesting forum.1st November 2017 at 5:06pm #18211DaveBourneParticipant
Good evening you old goat! I have tried to contact you but it would seem that the time you’ve spent with a data scientist has made you un-contactable, either that, or your wife has put a block on anything internet related for some reason!
It would be good to get a really good turnout this weekend so everyone can re-connect after what has been a pretty odd year. Going forward, if I can tempt the fat brewer away from his weekly cuddle with a hairy arsed, prop forward’s pants, then I’m sure we’ll be freezing our balls off somewhere on the south coast this winter to which you’ll be heartily invited.
See you all for a good piss up, sorry, excellent weekends sailing at Northampton,

In a nutshell my post got a robust repsonse which will get another . The gossip section of the website works for getting hold of those that need to be persuaded that of a weekend there is nothing better than driving miles, getting cold and wet, drinking too much, and then getting cold and wet again and with a hangover. Tell me that this is discussed on face book …… at least on the OK section thereof (I am lead to believe that there are far worse things to view on Mr Zuckerburg’s enterprise but as I am not a member …. no comment)
Anyway to rebut your statement …..there are no child restrictions on my internet connection,…… although the data scientist did warn me about internet trolls……. need I say more?
As for the hairy arsed brewer who believes he is a member of the front row club, or is he in the so called engine room hanging on to a props waistband with his head stuck between …….Anyway he can happily arrive at Stokes Bay and drag my boat up and down the shingle as part of His fitness regime on an official OK training weekend…. sorry was I insinuating that he trained?
will be great to catch up this weekend – have you bought your firework (banger or Catherine wheel???) – and tell the make believe prop or 2nd row that it would be good to see him again and that I will buy him a beer or two!
as for falling into the cold icy salt water somewhere on the S Coast……yeah I am up for it just not in 25+knots in January. Yeah I know … wimp!
see you on Saturday
PS we have been promised a visit by the “fast bowler” once he has done duty at his sons 4th birthday. Reckons he is up for a pub crawl and a night inthe back of his people carrier before sailing on Sunday. He will soon wish for family life!!1st November 2017 at 9:11pm #18214KazrobParticipant
Ironically enough I suggested and started the UK FB group as I thought the forum had gone dead for months and I know that FB groups works for other classes, but they are not perhaps for everyone. Anyway in my opinion they are complementary and cover slightly different bases with FB being more fleeting perhaps in longevity but with the advantage of encouraging quick interaction from phones etc during the day and forums being better at long form discussions. Having said that there is currently a very, very long thread about allowing carbon booms going on in the European FB group although the UK FB group may have seen the most confusing technical question ever asked online – “Should bottom meat brains be peculiar circular or oblong?” (It took a bit of working out that Kev meant to ask if the mast foot hole should be round or oval)
Currently 77 people have joined the group and anything posted on there is pushed to their FB news feed without having to go and look for it as you do with a forum. The last ‘nudge’ on the UK FB group for Northampton was seen by 68 people, Rodney’s excellent preview of Northampton on the main class association FB page has been seen by 433 people so far and there have even been posts that have been seen by over 2000 people! FB may not to be to everyone’s taste but it does reach a lot of people and helps raise the class’s profile a bit IMO.
Anyway that’s my tuppence as they say and if you are on there at any point please do talk about getting cold and wet before getting tired and emotional in the evening before doing it all again. Despite getting courses without a single gybe all weekend last year Nothampton was a great event and I wouldn’t miss it for anything despite the 375mi drive to get there Hope to see you all at the weekend1st November 2017 at 9:57pm #18217
no offence was meant And I am sure that all the click through and views are accurate – give or take!!! However having been warned off Facebook I won’t post there. I believe I inadvertently signed up as I get emails saying that someone has posted but I never post. Reasoning is pretty straightforward …..A professor who was a data scientist kept the arrival of her first child mute to see if she could beat the ads. Unfortunately a friend posted congrats on the new arrival. no mention of kids or anything, but by analysing age , sex, in a relationship etc Facebook determined through their algorithms that the probability was a child had arrived. Next time she logged on she was inundated with ads from baby sites. I could give you other scarier examples derived by a data scientist re political bent, age, ethnicity, religion, pictures and location etc. but I think you get the drift – Facebook through ML and AI probably knows more about you and your preferences than you do, which I find very uncomfortable. However as a consultant put it to me, being on Facebook and LinkedIn is the new norm. Not being on them seems to indicate you have something to hide to which my response would be roll on GDPR and the new data privacy regulations that arrive in May next year.
as far as I am concerned a website that has a couple of banner ads that also carries Rodney’s updates (as does Y&Y) and does not try to predict my behaviour, my propensity to spend given ads and click throughs works for me. Besides who in their right mind would post an ad up aagainst my last post. Be curious though to find out.
I am however as Dave points out an old goat and more than happy to chat with similar old goats on the website even if there are long periods of silence.

No offence was ever taken Andy and I didn’t mean to sound defensive about it if I did. For me it’s all complementary and while some people love FB and others hate it there’s still room for website forums (otherwise I wouldn’t be on here too ?)3rd November 2017 at 1:38pm #18243RodneytiddParticipant
Lovely to have you all back chatting freely, being rude to each other and generally being normal. I also am a little wary of the delights associated with more popular social media sites.
I have just purchased the required firework, at a PHU***** huge cost only to find that the good Mrs. Tidd had also purchased one. I am therefore of the thought that I may be able to cut my losses by offering someone a cut price deal. £20 firework for £10……Cant be bad!
Is anyone arriving at Northants tonight? If so I will be very much up for a beer!3rd November 2017 at 2:23pm #18244andrew turnerParticipant

Sorry gents. I spent from 3.00am to 5.00pm on Saturday in A&E and the ACU with my 91 year old mother who was rushed to hospital. Had to unkook the boat before I could head for the hospital.
hopefully more opens next year.

Hi Andy M.
Sorry to hear about your Mum. I hope all is well and she’s on the mend. Just so you know your comments were brought up at the committee meeting at the weekend. In essence we agree with you there hasn’t been enough chat and banter on the forum. Both facebook and the forum are great places to discuss all things OK and we should step the chat up a bit to reflect all that is going on. As Karen says F.B and the forum should compliment each other. I’ll try and do my bit.7th November 2017 at 8:07pm #18253Duncan EllisKeymaster
Andy, I hope the Matriarch of the Goat family is on the road to recovery
Thoughts from a retired webmaster …….. people moaned a lot when the old website was infected with XXX material / virus and the subsequent period of downtime with no forum. When the new website was set up we decided to keep the forum to maintain access to the archived posts and also welcome interested members.
Facebook & twitter are great for posting results and live commentary but the forum is better for banter and general piss taking, key ingredients for a successful season.
I think Dave getting married has shocked the OK gentleman’s club, signaled the end of an era, destroyed his blossoming bromance with Burt, leading to a general decline in forum postings. Ken retiring was also a significant factor. Its been a strange season….

Gossip…£900.00 Ouch !8th November 2017 at 10:00pm #18288
Careful now. Dave is only a pint away from reverting to norm. Besides as a married man he might yet appreciate the finer things in life like sailing in the Med as opposed to the N Sea or the Baltic (you never know).
As for my mum she is on the mend. Long slow process (a bit like me heading upwind), but to continue the analogy she will make the windward mark. As for the downwind legs (again a bit like me) she can always wear round the gybe mark which only leaves that tedious beat and a rock and roll finale down hill.

Dave asleep by 10:30 on Saturday night, whilst the rest of the fleet partied, very unusual behavior,no doubt comfortable middle age spread will follow…
