Russell HopkinsParticipantRight couple of bits of advice needed folks.
I have a black top mast at the moment, i weigh 14.5 stone is this the right mast for me?
Also i am desperate for a newer sail then my dishcloth i use at the moment. Money is a real issue at the moment so not got loads to spend. what sail should i use for my mast and does anyone have one for sail. I know that i should get the right sail for the right rig, so do i need to change my mast as well ??

NickCraigParticipantHi Russell – welcome to the class, hope to see you out & about next year!
14.5 stone, good weight, i’m there too! Its on the heavy end for an OK so you want a pretty stiff mast.
Black tops generally are stiff but its hard to say exactly without bend testing the mast (clamping the mast at the gooseneck, hang a 10kg weight on the tip and measure the bend vs. a straight line at 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 away up the mast.)
Key for a sail is that it the luff curve is a reasonable match to your mast bend.
Ideal would be to bend test your mast, buy a sail and then ask a sailmaker to recut it to match your mast bend (think North charge £50 for this).
However, its quite a lot of hassle and doesnt make as much difference as a sniffing a good windshift or doing a decent tack!
So I’d suggest putting a few second hand sails up your mast and finding one that looks good. Check this out by putting the sail up, lining up your boat onshore on a beat with some wind in it and pulling the main in hard ie your usual upwind setting. Broadly, if you get a long diagonal crease from about 3/4 up mast to clew of the sail your sail has insufficient luff curve. If you get a lot of sag in the luff, the sail has too much luff curve.
Buy the one that looks best and is within budget.I have 3 for sale if you are interested:
North sail, new June ‘05, used 1 week only £450
North sail, new April ’05 £250
North sail, new July ‘04, well used £50Happy sailing!

Russell HopkinsParticipantNick the well used north at £50 sounds good to me, it has to be better then mine. My mate bought a mast and sail from you a while back, dont know if you remeber charles Chandler? I think he might be looking for an ok again now!! which would make 2 a tewkesbury sc. Would your cheaper north be Ok?!? for a black top mast ? in principle? or is it off a carbon mast ? The batt sail i have with the boat i well past it to be honest.

NickCraigParticipantHi Russell – its for a carbon mast so it may not fit unless your black top is pretty stiff (which it may be). Anyway, its worth pulling up your mast to see how it looks….where are you located?
Cheers

NickCraigParticipanthi russell – jim hunt has kindly offered to take the sail back to Purple Marine (in Walsall) if that helps? i’ll see him at rutland this w/e
i digged the sail out the garage last night – it does not look pretty because last time I used it I snapped my mast and ended up in a mudbath at Dabchicks! So it is muddy & has 2 repaired batten pockets. However, it is still reasonably crinkly & shape will be fine. But it doesnt look nice so I’d take £20.
Let me know what you think
cheers
