which rig

Thinking about buying an ok. Goint to try one out in first. Weigh in at 13 stone. There seems to be a lot of different rigs out there some alloy some carbon. Lots of talk about blue tops etc.
Am i right in assuming the bendier/softer the rig the better if your light and visa/versa?

Please advise!

Hi,
maybe you could give a few ideas about where you’re coming from and what your ambitions are? If you’re coming into oks from a mirror and aiming to club race on the local pond I think the advice’ll be a bit different from if you’re coming out of, I dunno, skiffs or finns or something, contenders, and aiming at the worlds in Germany next year?

Fair points. Currently sailing a firefly at club level. Have sailed on and off for some time but not done any circuit sailing for years. Sailed many different boats in the past mostly crewing hiking boats. Not particularly fit and strong came out of a laser a few years ago due to some health probs. Good leverage at 6ft. I like to race as hard as i’m able. Currently sail inland but would try to do some opens and nationals if able.
Although there is one OK at our club i would be sailing in the handicap fleet which is what i do with the firefly. Quite shifty on our pond so like to be able to feel the rig and power up/down accordingly. Not sailed with a traveller before so understand technique different.
Budget wise i’ll be looking for GRP preferably and go for best i can afford, likely to be under £2000 though.
Very undecided as to what to get but my 9yr old crew is gaining interest in her oppie and my 5yr old not suitable for cold and windy weather!
Any input gratefully received.

Hi,

Where do you sail. The OK fleet is very helpful and we can always arrange for you to try a boat and get an idea of what you are looking for. I sailed a Firefly with my son before he got too big and returned to the ok.

We are at South Staffs. If you are in this part of the world at any time- call and we will get you a sail and arrange for you to see different bits of kit.

Inlands at Northampton is a good place to look or South Staffs open meeting. We are having a training day on the Sat before the open which would be ideal for a bit of familiarisation.
