OK’s at Lyme Regis …
Some early practice at the venue of the OK 2022 Worlds took place over the weekend of 3/4 August. For those who haven’t visited this part of the UK before, Lyme proved to be a lively, quaint and quirky little town with some fabulous places to eat and stay and whetted the appetite of all those who attended for future events.
For the first race on Saturday the wind was a very nice 3/4 and, joining in with the slow handicap fleet from Lyme Sailing Club’s annual Regatta, off the start the OK’s kept it very close with a trapezoid course. Gavin Poulloin, in his newly acquired boat, rounded just in front of the chasing pack. The reaches were fast and furious and the pack pulled up close behind by the leeward mark. On the upwind leg, Gavin continued to have the edge, with Keith Byers, now in second place, just managing to stave off Doug Powell at the finish.
Race two started in similar conditions with nice waves from the South East. Once again Gavin made the most of the upwind to lead with Tony Woods and Doug Powell in hot pursuit. Gavin pulled out a nice lead, followed by Doug and Tony.
Race three. With Gavin, clearly relishing the conditions and not putting a foot wrong, leading from start to finish with Tony and Keith close behind. Clearly those Thursday evening training sessions with ex national champion Curtis have paid off!!
After a great social and BBQ hosted by the Club on Saturday evening, Sunday dawned with lighter winds and a short chop which made it very difficult to keep the boats moving. Doug Powell having demonstrated how not to roll tack by missing the toe straps, capsizing and having a swim on the way to the first start, seemed to be most comfortable in the lighter airs and pulled out a commanding lead to be followed by Keith and Gavin.
Race five … this became a battle royal between Gavin and Doug with no more than a boat length between them for the whole race. Doug just pipping Gavin at the last minute, followed in a creditable third place by Weymouth sailor Tony Elgar.
Looking forward to next year!
